Discussion on Russian Propaganda and Nationalism
Hi everyone, my name is Ksyusha,
I'm a Russian who moved from Moscow to Ukraine during the war.
Today's conversation won't be the most pleasant, but it's necessary.
Under my latest Reels, the same comments from bots regularly pop up.
Like, I live among Nazis and fascists. What am I even looking at?
Every time I read this, I realize that people in Russia actually believe this nonsense.
After all, propaganda works systematically and for years.
I've been living in Ukraine for three years, and I'll say it straight.
In all this time, I have never encountered here what
I used to encounter back home in Russia.
And that's what I want to talk about in more detail.
When I was a child, my parents and I went on a pilgrimage to Diveyevo.
The whole family in the car, a bunch of kids, and Dad got out at a gas station
to buy us something to snack on.
My father, by the way, does not have a Slavic appearance.
And so he returns to the car,
and a group of shaved-headed guys with knives in their hands is already standing next to him.
Who, right in front of us, the children, said, "You won't leave here alive."
Do you know what saved us then?
The fact that my father was a police officer and had his service weapon in the car. I was about 13.
And if this had been an isolated incident, it could be blamed on thugs. But no.
Sinophobia and chauvinism in Russia have been developing for decades. Quite organized.
In the '90s and early 2000s, it was the RNE — Russian National Unity,
with swastika-like symbols and open street aggression.
In the mid-2000s, the DPNI gained strength — the Movement Against Illegal Immigration.
In parallel, there was the Slavic Union,
which later renamed itself to another "SS" — Slavic Power.
The symbolism, by the way, was not really hidden either.
In the 2010s, these were already annual Russian marches.
Thousands of people, some of whom were not ashamed to act openly.
RUSSIANS, FORWARD! RUSSIANS, FORWARD!
Among them was the former head of Roscosmos — Rogozin. Glory to Russia! Glory to Russia!
Now in Russia, the baton has been taken up by the Russian Community and Northern Man.
Formally, this is supposedly about patriotism and order.
But in essence, they repeat the exact same narratives as the DPNI 20 years ago.
There is evidence of how members of these movements
harass people solely based on their appearance and ethnicity.
Oh, but more on that in a couple of minutes. But that's different, right?
There are not only such movements in Russia.
In 2014, the DShRG unit Rusich is fighting in Ukraine.
In interviews, its commander did not mince words and openly called himself a Nazi.
I am a Nazi.
"I'm a Nazi." In other interviews, he talked about the abuse of prisoners of war
and Ukrainian civilians. And he talked about it calmly, as if it were routine.
So we are not talking about some marginal group on the sidelines, but about people
who officially fought and are fighting as part of Russian military structures.
And these people are also supposedly defending Russia from Nazism in Ukraine.
The absurdity is just off the charts. For those in Russia who might not know,
Ukraine has long had a law condemning communist and Nazi
totalitarian regimes,
and banning the promotion of their symbols.
And the Criminal Code of Ukraine has Article 436-1,
which directly provides for all of this. There is a Russian proverb:
"You see a speck in another's eye, but don't notice a log in your own." This is exactly about that.
