Historical Significance of Izmit, Turkey
Hi everyone! We are here in the city of Izmit, not far from Istanbul. The name might be familiar for several reasons. On one hand, there was a very severe earthquake here in the late 1990s, in which tens of thousands died. On the other hand, for us Hungarians, this city might be familiar because Imre Thököly and Ilona Zrínyi arrived here after the Treaty of Karlowitz. In 1699, the Treaty of Karlowitz was signed, and Thököly ran out of options.
Ilona Zrínyi, as you know, was the mother of Francis II Rákóczi, and right when the Rákóczi uprising, the war of independence, broke out, Imre Thököly and Ilona Zrínyi were forced to leave Transylvania and Hungary, and they emigrated here to Turkey, settling here in the Izmit area.
By the way, we are not far, 2–2.5 hours from Rodostó, which we won't reach now, where Rákóczi went into exile, where he had to go after the war of independence, but here you can read about the life of Miklós Bercsényi, who went to Poland during the uprising in 1710 to negotiate with the Russian Tsar, Tsar Peter I, where the defeat of the war of independence caught up with him, and then he fled to Poland.
Later to the Ottoman Empire, and at the end of 1718 he arrived in Constantinople, and from 1720 he also moved to Rodostó, like many of the heroes of the defeated war of independence.
Ilona Zrínyi, by the way, was buried in Istanbul in 1703, while Imre Thököly was buried here in the city of Izmit in 1705, and a few years ago, the Hungarian National Museum and the city, the Turkish city of Izmit, jointly created an exhibition here, a very high-quality exhibition, which we will look at shortly.
In the early 1900s, around 1906 as I recall, the Hungarian State agreed with the Turkish Porte to exhume both Thököly and Ilona Zrínyi, and they took them—Thököly was reburied in his hometown, Késmárk, and Ilona Zrínyi in Košice with her son, Ferenc Rákóczi.
So, if you are here, if you come this way, in Istanbul or around Istanbul, then it's worth visiting here in the city of Izmit. This is a very beautiful memorial house, with a typically turbulent yet uplifting part of Hungarian history, its three parts: the history of Hungary, the Kuruc uprising, and Thököly's role in exile.
Thank you very much to our Turkish friends for keeping this memorial house so beautifully. Bye!

Sziasztok!
Sziasztok!
