Political Analysis of Colombia's New Government

I want to talk to you about the incoming government,

the government of Abelardo de la Estrella.

I will start by saying what I have previously said

in the context of the campaign of political confrontation,

that I would never want Abelardo de la Estrella

to be the president of Colombia.

I am a democrat and I must respect democracy.

He was elected, and so, from that moment on,

I must be respectful of the new president of our country.

I have all my reservations,

but I will be as judicious as possible

in looking at what is happening with our government.

As I have said so many times,

the way one comes to power

determines the way one governs.

This government came to power around an image

built on social media with an impressive display of symbols,

of actions, which I always criticized in the context of the political campaign.

Recently, his chief advisor said

Campaigns are not won with reason.

Campaigns are not won with proposals.

To win single-winner elections you have to stir emotion,

feelings.

You're not thinking about a government plan

nor in the outdated proposals we talk about.

And indeed, that's how it was.

What is going to happen with all those symbols?

Let's look now at what has been happening

from the moment he was elected until today,

before taking office.

Again, a great number of symbols.

For example, the repeated gesture of being outside Bogotá,

against centralism.

Because that is a demonstration that

it is not Bogotá, the political center of the country, that is going to govern,

but a man from the regions.

How do you move from symbols to actions?

where the substance of governing lies.

And that is the biggest political challenge.

In the territories, it is important for the National Government to reach its territories,

to work with mayors and governors.

But working means rigor,

understanding the needs, the contexts.

And that is where the hardest part of governing lies.

Some people say, for example, that in campaigns you write poetry,

you present beautiful things, dreams, etc.

But then you govern in prose.

That is the big question.

A person who has had no experience in the public sector,

how are they going to govern?

That is the great challenge we face today.

Here, a team has been forming with different people,

many with prior experience.

That thing about never seeing him like that.

Some valuable people from the technical world.

We'll see. Let's bring seriousness,

rigor to the comments,

to the way these teams are going to be led.

But they certainly have to be aligned with the mindset of the leader.

And that leads us to one of the big questions

regarding what is to come.

During the campaign, it was said that José Manuel Restrepo was rigor,

technique, seriousness, and that the president was the show.

It remains to be seen.

How are technique,

rigor, seriousness, the show, and symbols going to be combined?

We haven't seen that in Colombia to this day.

A curious thing.

When President Petro was elected,

many people said they voted for Francia Márquez because

she represented another type of person in Colombian society.

She was the vice president.

We already saw how that relationship unfolded

because it was a relationship of necessity.

It ended very badly, very badly, what happened.

A big question mark.

Will the same thing happen with José Manuel Restrepo

and Abelardo de la Estrella?

We'll see.

To top it off,

it has been announced with great emphasis that

we are heading for a cultural battle in Colombia.

In other words,

from the beginning it is being defined that we are heading for a confrontation.

I think the worst thing that can happen

to Colombia today is a cultural battle.

Recognizing that the diversity of our culture,

the multiple expressions we have in Colombia by regions and people,

is essential to be able to build unity.

But here it is being viewed as a battle.

That means we are going to war.

All of Colombia loses in that war.

In the midst of populism and polarization, enemies are always needed

acting every single day, at all hours,

to move the government into confrontation.

And on the other side,

Petro is already announcing that he will be in that confrontation.

Are we going to turn this into De la Espriella versus Petro?

That is the worst thing that can happen to Colombia.

We'll see.

Vamos a ver.
