Raising Hands in Islamic Prayer

There are four instances in prayer when the Prophet( peace be upon him) used to

raise his hands.

The first instance is during the opening Takbeer.

The second instance is when bowing.

The third instance is when rising from bowing.

And the fourth instance is when standing up after the first Tashahhud,

in three- rak'ah and four- rak'ah prayers.

This was also narrated by Abdullah bin Umar( may Allah be pleased with them).

This indicates that raising the hands in prayer occurs in four instances.

I mentioned to you in the previous session that there is a consensus on

the legitimacy of raising the hands in prayer.

However, they differed on the number and the manner.

As for the number, some scholars held the view that raising the hands is only

done during the opening Takbeer. And who are they?

The Hanafis, and it is said the Malikis as well, or some Maliki jurists.

They said that this is only during the opening Takbeer.

As for the Shafi'is and the Hanbalis,

they held the view that raising the hands occurs in three instances:

during the opening Takbeer, when bowing, and when rising from bowing.

And the most correct view is what I mentioned earlier.

This is the view held by a group of scholars from the predecessors( Salaf) and among

contemporaries, that raising the hands occurs in four places during the prayer.

And they differed, of course, regarding prostration:

Should one raise them when going down

for prostration and when rising from it?

Hadiths have been narrated regarding this from Ibn Mas'ud and others,

but these hadiths are subject to scrutiny among the scholars.

Some of them went as far as authenticating them, but the correct view is

that these hadiths were rejected by the scholars.

Therefore, there is no raising of the hands in prostration, whether when going

down into prostration or when rising from it.
