Lula’s Re-election Victory in Brazil and Its Wider Impact
Absolutely massive victory out of Brazil.
President Lula da Silva winning re-election against Flavio Bolsonaro,
beating not
just the right in Brazil, but the right across the hemisphere from
the
United States all the way to Ecuador, to, uh, neighboring
Argentina, um, to El Salvador, and a, a fight
against the broader growing authoritarian and fascistic
tendencies in different countries surrounding one
of the biggest economies in the Americas.
Lula has been a thumb in the eye of Trumpism and,
uh, the demand that Brazil, uh, bow its entire
economy to the wills and the whims of
Trump's cronies. Um, the Bolsonaros were promising that.
They were promising prosperity through bribery and corruption,
and the people didn't buy it. So this is a huge
victory if you care about stopping fascism in the
Western hemisphere and the world.
It's a huge victory if you care about climate change
and the role that
the Amazon plays as the lungs of the world
in cooling our hemisphere, in creating rain clouds, uh, in
biodiversity. It's a huge victory for a worker's party.
Uh, and now of course the challenge is to deliver,
the challenge is to make sure that there are, that we, they defeat the
right in future elections 'cause you know the Bolsonaros aren't going away.
But today, just a hats off to Brazil because so many
countries have not been able to buck this trend.
So many countries have buckled under the pressure of fascists like
Donald Trump, uh, and Marco Rubio.
And so Bora Lula, I'm so happy, I'm
so proud. This is really, really critical. Such a critical win.
