Flooding Response in Linhai Ancient City

We’re currently in Zhejiang

at the ancient city of Linhai in Taizhou.

Before Typhoon Bailu arrived,

120,000 sandbags had already been used

to build a flood barrier here.

But after being battered by torrential rain,

this area of the Mengjiang River

still developed 100 meters of flooding.

When I just walked over here,

the water was already deep enough

to reach above my knees.

Now the inside of my rain boots

is already full of water.

But behind me, the pumps are working quickly

to restore the river’s normal appearance

as soon as possible. I’ve been here

for 18 hours. We began patrolling the river

at 10 p.m. yesterday.

By this morning, we found that the river

patrol was proceeding without any problems.

However, some water was bubbling up

through underground pipes. Since

our emergency drainage trucks hadn’t arrived yet,

we relied on manpower,

using sandbags to seal

several pipe-seepage points

with basic emergency measures.

Then, once the emergency pumps arrived,

they began dealing with the situation.

You can see that the flooding inside the city

is probably less severe than outside the city.

The difference in elevation is

nearly one meter.

As for flood-control measures in Xinjiang Town,

we can say that overall,

from top to bottom,

they are within the normal range.

We’re now trying to deal with

the current flooding as quickly as possible.

At the very least, our

strong town should be classified

as a third-level protected area,

and, like our main

urban area and its surrounding areas,

it should all be at the same level.

As everyone can see today, our main

problem appears to be the effect of the rising tide.

It’s clearly having a greater impact than last time.
