Digital Art Techniques with Clip Studio Paint
I'm so glad that many people saw the Clip Studio Paint challenge I posted the other day.
I also learned a lot from everyone's various approaches using only standard features. So, I'd like to explain how to do it in this video.
First, the condition was to use only standard Clip Studio Paint features, and to use default brushes instead of downloading them from Assets.
The brush I used is the Shading brush in the Airbrush tool. Its blending mode is set to Linear Burn, so the color darkens as you overlap strokes.
Next, let's look at the layer structure from top to bottom.
Set the folder's blending mode to Through. For the Level Correction correction layer, set it as shown in the reference image.
For the Gradient Map correction layer, set it as shown in the reference image as well.
The empty layer is where we will actually draw with the airbrush. Place a layer filled with white at the very bottom.
Set the blending mode to Multiply. Then, clip the correction layer and the empty layer to this bottom layer.
Now that the preparation is done, let's start drawing.
With this layer structure, drawing strokes with a soft-edged brush will create an internal gradient while expanding based on line density, thanks to the Level Correction and Gradient Map.
This allows you to create a mysterious, fluid-like expression.
When drawing water splashes, start with a thicker brush to block out the rough shape. Once the shape is done, make the brush thinner and refine the details in a spiral motion.
Let's make the brush even thinner and draw in the splashes. However, drawing them along the flow rather than randomly makes it look more fluid.
What do you think? You can achieve a similar effect with tone curves or border effects, but I prefer this method. I've given a brief explanation, but setting this up is extremely tedious.
So, I've turned this sequence of steps into an Auto Action. It sets up the layers with a single click so you can start drawing right away.
There's also a finishing Auto Action that uses a gradient map to set the colors. Please download and try it out from the link in the post.
Finally, I'll show you a few examples created using this Auto Action.
See you in the next video.
