It is an honor and a pleasure to be in Riga, to be in Latvia

and to be here as the president of Poland among our Polish friends.

The strength of Polish-Latvian relations is shown

not only by history, although it is, as you know,

important to me, because my profession is historian,

and when I am aware that already in 1920,

also thanks to Polish soldiers, it was possible

to defend Poland, Latvia and the whole region against

Soviet Bolshevik aggression and invasion, when

we look at our history in World War Two

and after 1945, when once again the freedom and independence

of Poland and Latvia were taken away by the Soviets, we see

that both on the historical field and on the historical

foundation on one side, and on the other side around our shared

goals that lie ahead of us, and in our respect

for the Euro-Atlantic community and its goals,

which speak about our independence, security,

about our commitment and economic cooperation

and infrastructural cooperation, Poland and Latvia are just

in all these matters together, united

and represent the same values. That is why I am very

grateful to President Edgars Rinkēvičs

for the invitation.
