This business trip to Beijing, I almost didn’t make it back home.

When I was fifteen and my family was in great financial difficulty,

I was interning and working in Dali, and there I happened to meet an overseas

Chinese who sponsored me so I could finish my studies.

So I have very deep feelings for the Beijing International Hotel.

It is also a place of great fateful connection for me.

After twenty- seven years, I came to Beijing again on a business trip,

and I wanted to stay at the Beijing International Hotel.

Um, Beijing Railway Station across the street, the nearby Tianjie,

every blade of grass and every tree, all of that moves me deeply.

When my business partner found out about my special bond with the Beijing

International Hotel,

he deliberately got me a telescope. He said,“ Teacher Zhang, hey, you can take

So I just opened the door a crack,

a tiny gap, and said,“ I do have a telescope, what about it?”

He said,“ What are you doing with the telescope?”

I said,“ I use the telescope to look.” He said,“ What are you looking at?”

I said,“ I am looking at Beijing Railway Station, at the scenery, what about it?”

He said,“ Where else did you look?” I said,“ I wasn’t looking anywhere else.”

I said,“ Is there a problem? Am I not allowed to have a telescope?”

He said,“ This is Chang’an Avenue.

Do not look at what you should not be looking at.”

Even though it was the middle of the night,

I suddenly understood that this was about safety awareness.

And it was safety awareness at the national level.

So I cooperated very well and told him where I am from, why I had the telescope,

and what I had looked at.

Then I said I would send the telescope away the next day.

After the people from the Public Security Bureau left,

I lay down and started thinking, who would know that I had a telescope in my room?

There was only one possibility: the housekeeper who cleaned the room.

Then why would they report it to the Public Security Bureau?

There are two possibilities.

One is that they might have experienced some real case like this before.

The other is that the Public Security Bureau told them,“ If you see someone in a

room with a telescope and their behavior seems suspicious…”
