Good morning to everyone, and thanks to President Orsini and to Confindustria for having promoted
this important initiative dedicated to one of the crucial sectors of the national
industrial fabric, which is the blue economy.
For us Italians, the sea represents many things at once, identity and wealth,
history, culture, tradition, but it is also one of the fundamental directions of
our geopolitical projection. Italy is the natural access point
to Europe and the geographic junction between the Old Continent, Africa,
the Middle East, and Asia, and it is in the Mediterranean and nowhere else that
our nation has always found the sign of its own destiny.
And yet, on too many occasions Italy has remained the victim of a paradox, being
a peninsula but not feeling and not acting like one. A contradiction that has
ended up suffocating our potential.
That is why this Government has worked from the very beginning to overturn this
perspective, looking at the sea as a resource to be developed in every respect
because the sea cuts across sectors and interests that are vital for
us, from tourism to industry, from ports to security, from environmental
protection to culture, from communications to trade, from the management
of migration flows to defense. The sea is the engine of our growth,
of our employment, of our well-being, because maritime interconnection
sustains the manufacturing industry, guarantees
the supply of energy and raw materials, and allows Made in Italy
to be exported around the world. With more than 200,000 businesses and one million workers
The sea economy in Italy generates added value equal to 76 billion
euros. We are first in Europe for the volume of goods
handled in short-sea maritime transport, we occupy the top positions
in the shipbuilding and high-complexity nautical industry,
with over 40 percent of the global market in the super-yacht
and cruise-ship sectors. A strategic sector that generates value
along the entire production chain and that, in a region like Genoa and
Liguria, where you have clearly chosen to celebrate the first event
of a journey that will lead you in 2027 also to Naples and
Campania, concentrates expertise, infrastructure, and industrial capacity
that make Italy a key player in the Mediterranean.
The blue economy, shipbuilding, are one of the five new supply chains around
which our Made in Italy is evolving and that the government has decided
to focus on in the industrial policy it is pursuing, because
our brand is a dynamic concept that over time has added to the classic supply chains
other segments. The pharmaceutical and medical device economy,
the space economy and defense, the tourism and hospitality supply chain,
the cultural industry and, precisely, the sea economy.
Our task is to support these sectors, help them grow, make them ever
more competitive, focusing first and foremost on simplification, innovation,
the enhancement of human capital, as we have done for example with the draft law
The Sea Resource, which is finally about to complete its process in
Parliament, but we want to carry this systemic vision forward also on another
crucial front, which is that of port logistics.
The government has approved a reform of port governance that has very
clear goals, overcoming fragmentation, developing a
national strategic plan, increasing the attractiveness of our
ports on the international stage. We are also looking with great attention at
new challenges, such as the underwater dimension,
we have established the national hub, we are the first European nation to have
created specific legislation dedicated to this domain, which is a
domain that is increasingly central to our economy, but also to our
safety. This is the course we want to keep charting to
unlock the still unexpressed potential of the sea economy.
We need vision, courage, concreteness, but above all we
need the ability to work as a team, because when the Italy system overcomes
divisions and rows together in the same direction,
well, ladies and gentlemen, our nation has no rivals and is truly capable of astonishing and
so thank you very much to you for your work, and have a good day, everyone.
