A Spangdahlem-based airman has been awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions in
combat.
It's an absolute honor to stand here as we recognize an aviator whose courage, his composure,
and his devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
United States Air Force Major Michael A. Bollea from the 480th Fighter Squadron received the
nation's third highest military decoration for valor at a ceremony on Ramstein Air Base.
The award recognizes Bollea's extraordinary heroism while piloting his F-16 Fighting Falcon.
According to the citation, Bollea intentionally flew into enemy fire to shield his fellow
service members, preventing further loss of life.
This Silver Star stands as a symbol that we are ready to handle anything and that we
will overcome any obstacle placed in front of us.
Major Bollea is now one of a select few to receive the Silver Star since the Air Force's
establishment in 1947.
