Islamic Teachings on Morality and Conduct

The cuckold. Imagine a man who sees wrongdoing enter

his home, and sees immodesty or forbidden relationships, or whatever

angers God, yet his heart does not stir and he feels no protective jealousy

for his family, nor does he care about what is happening. This kind of

man has not been passed over lightly by Islam, rather

it contains a stern warning for him. The Prophet, may God bless him

and grant him peace, said: “Three will not enter Paradise:

the one who is disobedient to his parents, the habitual drinker, and the cuckold.”

Cuckoldry is neither strength nor open-mindedness, as some try

to portray it. Rather, it is the death of the protective jealousy that

God placed in a man’s heart. Moderate protective jealousy is a trait of

believers, while accepting wrongdoing and not caring about it

is among the most dangerous things that corrupt homes and societies.

Those who imitate women. In an age when

people are forgetting their natural disposition and turning toward the disposition

of the opposite sex, those who are called in our present time

“the colors.” But Islam came to preserve

the natural disposition upon which God created people. The Prophet

may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “The Messenger of God cursed

Men who imitate women, and women who imitate

men.” What is meant is deliberately imitating them,

whether in clothing, movements, or

the way one speaks or one's appearance. Islam wants

a man to take pride in the manhood God created him with ,

just as it wants a woman to take pride in her natural disposition. We do not want to

lose our afterlife because of a passing desire.

One who exposes his awrah. A man's awrah is the area

from the navel to the knee. The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said:

“Guard your awrah, except from

your wife or those whom your right hand possesses.”

Today, laxity in this matter has become more

widespread than ever before. Some people

expose what God commanded to be covered without thinking,

while others publish pictures and videos publicly,

as if life no longer had any place for it.

But the believer knows that God is always watching him,

whether he is alone or among people.

That is why the early Muslims were modest before God even in

private. Qaza‘. Some hairstyles may seem

like a simple matter not worth worrying about. But

Islam is a religion that cares even about the smallest details

which shape a Muslim’s character and appearance. The Prophet

(peace be upon him) forbade al-qaza‘. Al-qaza‘

means leaving a large portion of the hair long while

shaving part of it. As for what is permissible, it is trimming

the sides with a natural fade, so that the appearance is

neat and attractive, without exaggeration or creating

strange designs and shapes. The Prophet (peace be upon him)

once saw a boy with part of his hair shaved and part left long,

and said, “Shave it all or leave it all.”

Wearing gold and silk.

Some men may think that small pieces of gold on a finger

are not worth paying attention to. Another may think that a

gold bracelet or gold chain is merely an adornment,

nothing more.

But surprisingly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not

leave this matter unexplained. One day, the Prophet

(peace be upon him) held silk in one hand and gold in

the other, then said, “These two are forbidden for the males

of my ummah and permissible for its females.” Consider that.

Gold, which people compete over, and silk, which symbolizes

luxury and extravagance, He made both permissible for them

For women. The one who neglects his family may succeed

in his business, achieve fame, and

amass wealth, with people applauding him.

But the real question is: How is his home?

How are his children? How is his wife?

How many men know every detail of their work, but do not

know what occupies their children? And how many men stay up

for the sake of this world, yet cannot find time to sit with

their families for even a few minutes? That is why the Prophet

peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is enough sin for a person to neglect

those whose sustenance he provides." The one who lets his garment trail out of pride.

The problem is not the piece of cloth. The problem lies in what

is hidden inside the heart. A person may wear a

simple garment, yet see himself as above everyone

else. Another may possess wealth and status, yet

still be humble. That is why the Prophet, peace

and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever drags his garment

out of pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection."

Indeed, arrogance is one of the most dangerous diseases of the heart, the disease that

made Iblis refuse to bow to Adam, and it is the disease

that drives its possessor to despise others and act arrogantly

upon them. That is why the righteous feared arrogance

more than they feared many obvious sins.

The man who divulges his wife's secrets.

Imagine a woman who trusted her husband,

told him her secrets, and opened her heart to him,

believing that what went on within her home's walls

would remain confidential. Then she discovers that her husband

is passing her news on to others, speaking about

her private matters, and revealing what should have remained

concealed.

That is why the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, issued a stern warning,

saying, “Among the worst of people in rank before

God on the Day of Resurrection is the man who is intimate with

his wife, and she is intimate with him, then spreads her secret.”

Reflect on his words: “Among the worst of people.” He did not say that he

had merely made a mistake. Rather, he described him as among the worst of people

in rank before God, because marriage is not merely

a contract, but a trust, confidence, and protection.

The elderly adulterer. A person may succumb to

his desire in the prime of his life, and may be driven by

his urges during his youth. But the greatest danger

is for a person to reach an advanced old age,

his hair to turn gray, and his days to draw him closer to meeting God,

Then he still insists on persisting in this sin.

That is why the Prophet singled out the elderly adulterer for a severe warning in the Prophetic Sunnah.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“There are three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor

look at, nor purify, and they will have a painful punishment.”

Among them, he mentioned an elderly adulterer.

Reflect on this warning. It does not merely mean falling into

sin, but persisting in it despite the years having passed,

despite gray hair having covered his head, and despite death having become

closer to him than ever before. Gray hair is a message from

Allah reminding a person that this world is not a place of permanence,

and every white hair is a reminder that life grows shorter

day after day. So what of the one who sees all these messages

and then continues along the path of sin without repenting?

That is why the sin of the elderly adulterer is more serious, because the urge

to indulge his desire is generally weaker in him than in a young man, yet he

chooses to follow his desires and turn away from his Lord’s command.

How noble it is for a person to end his life in obedience, and how dangerous

it is to approach the end of his journey while still persisting

For sin. There are more mistakes that a man commits

against his Lord, but these warnings are not

meant to bring people down, but to awaken hearts before it is too late.
