Support for Syria's Struggle for Freedom
I want to express our emotion at being, indeed,
back today in Syria, in Damascus with you.
There is history, of course,
that of your country at the crossroads of so many civilizations,
of ideas, of movements that have each shaped us and allowed us
to be who we are in the Levant, in the Mediterranean,
in Europe too, as we are so indissolubly linked
to one another.
There is our history, more particularly,
and that of the last 15 years,
during which the Syrians showed everyone that a united
people was invincible, that they were leading a revolution of
dignity and that they would win, whatever the cost.
It took courage for those who, first, in Daraa,
Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, and all over the country,
were the first to go out to demand the fall of the regime.
It took courage and audacity for those who kept
alive the great dream of a free Syria while the dictator
was plunging their country into the abyss.
It took self-sacrifice for those who lost everything,
their children, their families, their belongings,
on the roads of exile.
And forcefully, France pays tribute to them today,
tribute to the entire Syrian people.
Mr. President, I know the loneliness of the Syrians in the
war, under the blows of the dictator,
his militias, his allies, terrorists and fanatics
who came to fight here at their expense.
It took too long to emerge from it.
The French know this well, the terrible attacks that
plunged our country into mourning in 2015, and then in 2016,
were prepared in Syria by terrorist groups who have
recruited too many volunteers from French,
European, or North African youth.
Many have committed serious crimes here and in France,
but the worst would have been to resign ourselves to chaos.
France has therefore supported the Syrians as best it could,
with constancy, against the former regime,
against the terrorists, with those who fought them,
with all those who could contribute to the advent of a
new Syria, from the beginning to the end.
Therefore, Mr. President, when a new era
opened, France decided, in good conscience, to support it.
And it is in this spirit that I received you in Paris on May 7,
2025 for your first visit outside of this region.
I then told you of France's commitment to a free
and sovereign Syria.
I told you how much we were by your side on this path
of trust, where there was, as you knew,
a lot to do.
And I had made the commitment to come, and I am here.
