I'm very happy to be here today. This is a historic day for me, and it comes with sadness and anger, because thousands of people, innocent students and civilians, they were massacred on June 1st, 1989 in Tiananmen Square. I was one of the most wanted students in southern China after the massacre, and then I was able
to escape China to Hong Kong with the Operation Yellow Bird in July 1989. So I was very fortunate, and I came to America as a political refugee, and I restarted my life in the United States. In about 2016, 2017, my daughter, Alyssa Liu, was a rising star in American figure skating, and it was very clear in 2021 that she was going to represent the United States of America
in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. And that's when the Chinese government targeted me and also her. The reason why her? Because she posted news reports of the labor camps and the persecution of the Uyghurs in China in 2018 on her Instagram.
She was only like 11, 12 years old. I did a very good job educating her about the lack of democracy and human rights in China, and she also spoke up using her platform on Instagram to spread the news of the persecution of the Uyghurs in China. She was only 11, 12, and that's four or five years later back in 2021, and the Chinese
government never forgot about her.
