Cost Analysis of Electric Trucks

The electricity costs saved by electric trucks simply don't count as

profit that ends up in your pocket.

In the past, hauling freight in a diesel truck,

you got the corresponding diesel-truck freight rate.

After working your tail off, you could more or less

still have some income left over.

But now, after switching to electric heavy-duty trucks, freight rates

are lowered in line with electric trucks' costs.

It may look like you save a chunk on electricity, but after doing the full math,

you actually work harder than with a diesel truck.

Your take-home earnings haven't increased by much.

When you're buying the truck, salespeople only keep

telling you that electricity is cheap and that freight and operating

costs are lower. They rarely volunteer to mention an electric

truck's high purchase price,

or the gradual degradation of the battery over time.

Then look at the truck's densely packed high-voltage wiring.

Its electronic control components are complex. If any one of them

fails, the truck could very well be

completely sidelined, unable to run for days at a minimum.

Later repair costs, labor charges, and parts prices

are far higher than for diesel heavy-duty trucks.

High vehicle depreciation, battery wear,

and high repair costs are all factored

in, an electric truck's total operating

expenses aren't as low as imagined.

Once you do the math,

electric heavy-duty trucks really aren't something every trucker

can afford to keep running.

Owners planning to buy a new-energy heavy-duty

truck must think twice before acting.
