Final Speech of a Leader in Crisis

Fellow countrymen,

this will surely be the

last opportunity I will have to address you.

The Air Force has bombed

the towers

of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación.

My words

hold no bitterness, only disappointment,

and they will be the moral punishment

for those who have betrayed

the oath they swore.

Soldiers of Chile,

commanders-in-chief

and Admiral Merino, who has appointed himself.

And Mr. Mendoza,

a craven general,

who only yesterday

declared his fidelity and loyalty to the government, will also be appointed

director general of the Carabineros.

In the face of these events,

all I can say to the workers is: I will not

resign.

Placed at a historic crossroads,

I will pay with my life

for the people’s loyalty.

And I tell you

that I am certain

of the seed we have given to the conscience

worthy of thousands and thousands of Chileans

cannot be permanently cut down.

They have the strength,

they may overwhelm us,

but social processes

do not stop

either through crime

or through force.

History is ours, and it is made by the people.

Workers of my homeland,

I want to thank you for the loyalty you always showed,

the trust you placed in a man

who was only the interpreter

of great aspirations for justice,

who gave his word

that he would uphold the Constitution and the law, and so he did.

At this

decisive moment,

the last in which I can address you,

I want you to take this lesson to heart.

Foreign capital,

imperialism,

allied with reaction,

created the climate

for the Armed Forces to break

with their tradition,

the one, the one that Schneider taught them

and which he reaffirmed

Commander Araya.

A victim

from the same social sector

that today will be at home waiting with foreign hands

to regain power

so as to continue defending their perks and privileges.

I address myself above all

to the humble women of our land,

to the peasant woman who believed in us,

to the woman worker who worked harder,

to the mother who knew of our concern for children.

I address myself

to the nation's professionals,

to patriotic professionals,

to those who days ago were working

against the sedition sponsored by the professional associations,

class associations, to defend as well the advantages that

capitalist society gave to a few.

I address the youth,

those who sang, gave their joy and their

fighting spirit.

I address the men of Chile,

the worker, the peasant, the intellectual,

those

who will be persecuted,

because in our country fascism has already been present for many hours

in terrorist attacks,

blowing up bridges, cutting railway lines, destroying

oil and gas pipelines.

Faced with the silence of those who had the obligation to put a stop to it, we are

committed. History will judge them.

Radio Magallanes will surely be silenced

and the calm metal of my voice will not reach you.

It does not matter.

You will continue to hear it.

I will always be with you. At least my memory

will give you the worthy name that was loyal to the loyalty of

all.

The people must defend themselves,

but not sacrifice themselves.

The people must not allow themselves to be crushed or riddled with bullets, but neither can they

humble themselves.

Workers of my homeland,

I have faith in Chile and its destiny.

Other men

will overcome

this gray and bitter moment where betrayal

seeks to prevail.

Go on knowing

that sooner rather than later,

once again,

the great avenue will open

where free people will walk to build a better society.

Long live Chile! Long live the people!

Long live the workers! These are my last words

and I am certain that my sacrifice will not

be in vain.

I am certain that it will at least be a moral lesson

that will punish

treachery, cowardice and betrayal.

For everyone

No importa.

Lo seguirán oyendo. Siempre estaré junto a ustedes.
