Film Review of a Book Adaptation

Eles estariam falando, sabe,

The movie is never going to be better than the book. That's for many reasons. One of which is because you're going to have to cut a lot of things out because you don't have enough time. So I'm not going to sit here and tell you, oh, he forgot to add this or he changed this. A lot is going to change.

That's kind of par for the course. What matters the most and what I was actually very impressed with is that he was taking the story, remaining as faithful to it as possible, and changing only the things that he needed to absolutely get his message across because ultimately that's kind of the whole point.

He's telling his story and I thought it was a good one. I just made a video about it. You'll see that soon. But here are the things that I absolutely did not like and the things that made it honestly almost unwatchable. First things first, the armor and the

costume design was worse than I could have ever possibly imagined. I'm going to have to eat my words on this one. I said for the last year and a half that the costuming can't possibly be that bad and also it's not going to take you out of the film that much. No, it was worse than I could have ever possibly imagined.

I don't know which I hated worse. the paper mache white something resembling a helmet worn by the Trojans or like the medieval knights with no design or spirit to them of the Lystragonians. It was all a fucking mess and it was so bad and Menelaus looked like Darth Vader and it was worse than I could have possibly imagined.

It was so bad that I have to imagine that there was a rhyme or reason behind why Nolan decided to do that but I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Second thing I like Helen and Menelaus's relationship. In the Odyssey their relationship is much more amicable.

She's like very full of self pity and she feels bad and she's like so sorry to Menelaus and she like is you know kind of self loathing and stuff like that and Menelaus just has like a more sort of jolly disposition. He is like very kind to Telemachus and he's like a you know a good host and all these things.

Their relationship in the film Menelaus and Helen was like they fucking hated each other and she's got all these scars on her face and body Like Menelaus beats her or something. I have I have no idea what the reason behind that choice was maybe again I'm just not seeing something third thing.

This probably isn't gonna bother a lot of people but it really bothered me He changes the relationship dynamic between the three animal herders You have the swine herd Eumaeus the cow herd Philotheus and the goat herder Melantheus and Melantheus The goat herd is the bad guy and Eumaeus the swine herd He's like the loyal servant Philotheus is kind of somewhere in the middle.

So Nolan takes him out of the story So now you have Eumaeus the swine herd and Melantheus the cow herd the problem with that is that the reason that Melantheus is evil is because he's sort of Associated with this goat trope because goats are naturally like more aggressive and difficult to tame They have like a very voracious sexual appetite Which is why Melantheus is

one of the suitors and Eumaeus is not There's so much symbolism tied into the goat thing and the fact that they changed that and made him the cowherd Kind of defeats the purpose of the connection again It was one of those things where I'm like, it's kind of not that big of a deal But why would you change it and finally kind of just like an overarching feeling that I had throughout the film was that it was

so Unenchanting I felt like I was not watching a period piece. I felt like I was not watching something out of history It felt like it was just some action movie that takes place in a different timeline on a different planet universe Whatever and also the fact that they were speaking like modern American dialects and not speaking like Queens Latin Shakespearean sort

of English You want to see that at least a little bit in a period piece. It kind of takes you back in time a little bit. I know it's not accurate. They would have been speaking, you know, Koine Greek or something, but why not do that? That's what I kind of mean about this whole like attention to detail.

The costuming was bad and their accents were bad and it's just like all these little things that kind of just like slowly pull you more and more out of the story and makes it a little bit hard to watch. With that being said, I thought it was pretty good overall.

I think that the themes that they covered and like I said, the story that Nolan himself is trying to tell. I'm not the first to say this. I got this from Jonathan Padgett, but it is very much like a Trojan horse. Stay tuned for my next video talking about the decline of civilization.
