Why is there a massive ancient arch standing alone in the middle of this field? Let's go and investigate. Check out this old map from 1659. We're just here in the village of Dale. There does seem to be a large building marked on the map there. Now check out this later map from 1879. It's labeled as Dale Abbey in ruins and look on the left here. They seem to have the layout of a rather large building.

If you take a look behind the arch you can actually see some of the ruins in the grass here. So it turns out the Abbey dates from 1204. So it's over 800 years old. I found this sketch of what they think it used to look like. The arch that's left would be this window on the eastern end. Originally this would have been a stained-glass window. So what exactly happened to the Abbey?

Well in 1538 Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries. Hundreds of monasteries across the country were dismantled or destroyed. Here's what Dale Abbey looked like shortly after. Most of the stone from these old abbeys was recycled or repurposed in other buildings. If you stroll around the village of Dale you see quite a lot of the cottages have massive blocks of stone in their walls.

These are no doubt part of the old Abbey. Having another look at the map there's this place called a Hermitage nearby. This is a holy site that's apparently even more ancient than the Abbey. Let me know in the comments if you'd like me to go check that out too.
