Overview of Semiconductor Industry Development
We all know that chips are used practically everything that we
use at, in our homes or outside.
chips। Semiconductor एक foundational industry है। We never had a
semiconductor industry in our country.
Even though attempts were made since 1960s, finally we have
been successful in getting the semiconductor industry established in our
country.
Ingot is like एक cylindrical
Bare
What we see this is, this is a
fabricated wafer.
Fabricated wafer means the entire circuit has
been fabricated, etched on this wafer.
Um,
imagine writing your name on your fingernail.
Imagine now writing the names of all your classmates who
have been with you on this same fingernail. Would it be more complex?
Yes, it would be more complex. Now imagine writing all your
textbooks of class ten
on this small fingernail.
That would require extremely fine work, which
normally is not possible to do by human beings.
We require very special machines to do that.
That is the level of precision which is required to be done
while fabricating the
chips. Then there are multiple layers of the
chip in this wafer itself. Thickness of this wafer
is like you can see the tip of the, uh, pen.
It's, it's so thin, and still it's like 40,
50
layers, 40, 50 storey building kind of construction
fabrication done in this wafer.
That has to be packaged.
It's called ATMP process. Once ATMP process is
done, then the chip becomes something like this.
These are finally chips. They go into a finished
product.
The complete value chain from sand, silicon ingot, bare wafer,
fabricated wafer, the chip, then it goes into different
modules. This is a module.
This is a module. This is a memory module
which will go inside a computer.
So this memory module finally goes into the finished products.
That's the whole value chain. What we are attempting today in our country is
getting this entire value chain in our country.
Mobile phone manufacturing scheme,
IT hardware की manufacturing की scheme, components की manufacturing की
और semiconductor chips के साथ-साथ we are also attempting to get the entire
ecosystem in our country.
The success we have had in the recent times is
that after almost 60 years of,
uh,
not being able to get the semiconductor industry, finally, we were successful in
the last, uh, decade. And today, out of
the 12 plants which have been approved under, under the Semiconductor Mission
1.0,
um, three plants have already started
manufacturing.
What I'm showing here is
the two chips which have been commercially manufactured in our
semiconductor plants.
That's something which is very satisfying, uh, but that
is not the end goal. This is just a beginning.
That is just-- this is just a beginning.
We have to really take our semiconductor industry to a different level.
What's important is we have also been able to create a design ecosystem.
Although it's very nascent, it's very small so far, and lot more
needs to be done.
This is a chip which has been designed by one of the design
linked incentive
partner, DLI partner in our government.
What is even more heartening is the chips designed and
manufactured by students.
Puducherry, students from Dhanbad designing it.
We have students from Rourkela designing it, students from Durgapur
designing it, students from Jammu, students from Calcutta,
Surat. That kind of success was possible only because we thought
of the entire semiconductor mission in a very comprehensive way.
We thought of it as an ecosystem to be developed.
We didn't say just set up a fab. No. We need to develop the
entire ecosystem. And that's where our Prime Minister also
guided us that
think 20 years. Don't think of four or five years.
Think 20 years ahead and develop the entire ecosystem.
So after the success of the SEMICON 1.0,
today we will be launching SEMICON 2.0.
The students who are interested in semiconductor industry
and those who want to know more about it, please drop your
comments below. We would like to collect all
the, um, comments, and then we will
upload a complete explainer which explains the entire semiconductor
industry. Thanks.
