Saudi-Omani Historical Conflicts
The Saudi state rose again,
and life returned to the Saudi state in Najd under Imam
Turki bin Abdullah. Consequently, internal tension and the Najdi threat
to Oman returned.
On the other hand…
Sadly, the grave event that shook the foundations
of Oman from east to west, and from north
to south, occurred. The Saudis returned to Oman once again
under al-Sudairi's leadership. They attacked Sohar, then headed to
Ja'alan, then to Sur,
and every city they entered. Sultan Thuwaini
bin Khadkhar traveled overland from Muscat to the Eastern Region and marched to Sur,
but he did not find the attackers there, due to their withdrawal
from it.
Here, the Sultan resolved to retake Buraimi, which the Saudis had occupied.
As the Sultan was preparing to eliminate the Saudi presence in Buraimi and liberate it,
a grave and unexpected event occurred,
when his treacherous eldest son,
Salim, shot his father while he was sleeping in Sohar Fort.
Salim killed his father and imprisoned his uncle, Sayyid Turki, in
Prison. Turki bin Ahmed Al Sudairi was in Buraimi
He was the Saudi prince in Buraimi, and Sayyid Salim
had his uncle thrown in prison, uh…
A British warship got him out of
prison. The British authorities convinced
Sayyid Turki to seek refuge and reside in India in exchange for
an annual pension of seven thousand two hundred
Maria Theresa dollars, which would, of course, be deducted from the Zanzibar subsidy,
to which we will devote a separate episode.
The British authorities were displeased by the assassination
because it ended their ambition of expelling the Saudis from
Buraimi. Sayyid Salim sent a delegation to Bombay
to meet with the British officials there
and request recognition as ruler of Oman,
but the delegation's request was ignored
and postponed until the situation became
clearer on the ground.
The Second Saudi State was established by Imam Turki bin Abdullah,
so they decided to intervene and eliminate the new Emirate of Diriyah
The House of Saud's capital. The Turks attacked Riyadh, but they
failed to take it. In March
1839, Saad bin Mutlaq arrived in Sharjah
accompanied by 150 men. The British immediately warned
the Sheikh of Sharjah in a strongly worded letter that he
must get rid of Saad bin Mutlaq by any means necessary.
But Imam Turki bin Abdullah revived the Second Saudi State,
and once he had consolidated his rule and the new state's situation had stabilized,
he issued orders in late
1832 to his commander, Omar bin
Ufaissan, to prepare an expedition against the Buraimi Oasis.
On January 15,
1833, Commander bin Ufaissan marched from
Al-Ahsa with a force of three thousand men,
heading for the Buraimi Oasis, which he reached on
February 18 of the same year.
Upon arriving in Buraimi, the Najdi forces
occupied the Al-Khandaq Fort.
At the beginning of Najdi control over Buraimi, after they had managed to
strengthen their position and establish themselves in the region, he sent
to Sayyid Said, demanding money in return for not
attacking his lands. Sayyid Said sought
the advice of his English allies, who let him down as usual
whenever their interests did not align with his. They advised him
to settle matters with the Najdis without their involvement,
and also advised him to pursue an approach far removed from
violence and to settle matters peacefully whenever possible.
Some historians condemned Sayyid Said for making this
agreement with the Najdis because Sayyid
Said bin Sultan possessed the region's second most powerful fleet after the
English fleet, with around eleven
thousand men serving aboard his ships in 1833.
Based on the mutual defense treaty that was
activated at the request of Sultan Said bin Sultan,
Najdi forces were enlisted in the attack on Mombasa in
1834. The death of Imam
Turki bin Abdullah was announced, and calm prevailed in the region.
In mid-1835, an Arab merchant arrived in Muscat
named Abdullah bin Mishari, carrying
a letter from Ahmad Pasha to Sayyid Said bin Sultan,
The Ottoman governor says in this letter that he had wronged
Abdullah bin Mishari in the Qatif region and asks Sayyid Said
to assist him in his mission. The Sultan received the delegation
warmly and respectfully, providing provisions and a vessel
to carry him to Qatif. Naturally, he must have sent
fighters with him to assist in his mission, but
it seems Imam Turki learned of the Ottoman plan,
so he made a preemptive move and sent forces to Qatif
and took control of it.
Sayyid Said and Emir Saad bin Mutlaq agreed, with the Sultan's assistance,
to retake Sohar and Rustaq from Sayyid Hamoud bin
Azzan. On December 8,
1841, Emir Abdullah's rule
over Najd was announced, and he immediately sent an emissary to the sheikhs of the
Omani coast, expressing his desire to send an emir to rule
in his name, namely Saad bin Mutlaq. The sheikhs of the
Omani coast replied that they were under British protection, and the British
Resident, Robert Stone, warned the Emir of his ambitions
and his plans, and that the British would not stand idly by,
and reminded him of the deterrent action they took against the Qawasim
in 1820. Once Imam Faisal's affairs were settled,
they immediately began contacting the sheikhs
of the Omani coast and the Al Buraimi Oasis, expressing a desire to send Saad bin
Mutlaq to serve as his deputy in the region, in June
of 1843. The Saudi request was met
with opposition from the sheikhs of Dubai and the Al Buraimi Oasis, who believed that
Saudi control of the region would limit their self-rule
in their territories. In November
1843, the two sheikhs,
Hamoud bin Salour Al Nuaimi and Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi,
contacted the British, but they were surprised by the British response, which
stated that what was happening among the people of the Arabian Peninsula was an internal
matter in which Britain could not intervene,
as Britain was committed to protecting them if they came under
external attack. This response shows that the British had no
principle other than their own interests, for the British would not take action
for any action against Imam Faisal. Therefore, in 1844,
he sent a detachment of 700
Qandi troops led by Saad bin Mutlaq Al Mutairi, accompanied by
Sheikh Nasser bin Ali Al Uraimi to take charge of judicial affairs in
the region. Saad departed Al Ahsa
on January 13, 1844, and arrived in
Al Buraimi on February 7 of the same year.
As soon as the sheikhs in the region learned of Al Qasimi's abandonment
of them, they hastened to pledge allegiance to Saad bin Mutlaq, not willingly
but under duress, for neither the British nor Sayyid Said saved them.
While Saad bin Mutlaq was taking control of Al Buraimi,
Sayyid Said had equipped an army of 1,000 Qandi troops to invade
the African mainland, and Maktoum bin
Butti, the Sheikh of Dubai, accompanied him on this campaign. Saad bin Mutlaq sent word to Sayyid Thuwaini bin Said
in
Muscat, demanding 20,000
rupees from him and 5,000 rupees from Sayyid Hammoud bin
Azzan, the ruler of Sohar. When Sayyid Thuwaini delayed
his response, the Saudis attacked Al Batinah,
forcing the ruler of Sohar to raise the amount owed by him.
Here, Saad bin Mutlaq decided to attack Muscat. An agreement was reached
between Sayyid Thuwayni and Saad bin Mutlaq that
an amount of five thousand Austrian riyals would be paid to the Saudis annually.
Saad attacked the forts of the Ajman region. The Al-Ghafiriya sheikhs
attempted to reconcile the region's
feuding and fighting sheikhs in order to form
a united front against the Saudis.
