Critique of Singapore's Investment Practices

Watch a clip of the former Singapore

Prime Minister at the May Day Rally

in 2015.

We are already Indonesia's largest

foreign investor.

They are fifty times bigger than us.

Two hundred and fifty million people.

From time to time, they remind us of that.

To this day, I still remember it clearly,

and honestly, I feel

offended because,

as the former head of the

Investment Coordinating Board

BKPM, I understand how our country

is viewed by Singapore as a

country that begs for handouts.

That is an evil and misguided mindset.

Let me explain.

This Singaporean leader's mindset

is based on arrogance because the

amount of Singapore's investment

in Indonesia has indeed

ranked first for years.

This amount makes them

feel entitled to state

that they matter more even

though their country is five

times smaller. In fact, the opposite is true.

How can Singapore,

which has no natural resources,

feel it can support us, unless they deliberately

designed a system so that the profits

from wealth extracted from the land of

Indonesia, amounting to three

to four thousand trillion rupiah

in profits and foreign exchange,

are parked to sustain Singapore.

How do they do it? They use incentives and tax

treaties that can now be

questioned and must be

accounted for. Why should there be

tax treaties that harm us like this?

And who must be held accountable?

Many Indonesians have heard

the term transfer pricing,

but they do not yet understand this model of crime

this economy. Let me illustrate it with a

very

simple analogy. Singapore markets

itself through its status as a

headquarters

and global trader that facilitates

transfer pricing practices.

Imagine an entrepreneur

mining tin, coal, or

processing palm oil in Indonesia.

From Indonesia, he first sells those goods to

his shell company in

Singapore for one hundred.

Once in Singapore,

that shell company then sells the same goods

to the global market

for two hundred fifty.

Our country, Indonesia, should receive full tax revenue from

that price of two hundred fifty

to build schools, hospitals,

and world-class technology universities on par with

NTU

for Indonesian children. But with that special status in

Singapore, on the profit

difference of one hundred fifty

that

moved there, they pay much lower taxes

or even no taxes at all.

Then the profits are parked in Singapore.

When they need to clear new

land for palm oil or mining

in Indonesia,

they use those Singapore entities

to reinvest in Indonesia.

So, in fact, they are Indonesians

themselves or other foreigners using Singapore entities

to invest in Indonesia.

That is what the IMF report calls

phantom FDI or fictitious investment. Singaporeans

themselves or genuine Singaporean

money may not account for

even a quarter of what

is directly invested

in Indonesia,

because the rest is money

from Indonesia's own

natural resources being cycled back.

They call this round tripping.

After making huge profits from our land,

they list on the Singapore Exchange

because its incentives are extraordinary,

sometimes even better

than Hong Kong's. Of the three

groups of palm oil companies whose

plantations are on Indonesian soil

alone, their market capitalization

on the Singapore Exchange reaches

nearly

two hundred trillion rupiah. And if all

companies with Indonesian- based assets

listed there are combined, their total

market value exceeds seven hundred to

eight

hundred trillion rupiah. After accumulated profits from

those companies are paid out

as dividends to individuals,

they ensure these personal

dividends are reinvested

and do not leave Singapore.

Lured by a sweetener called a family

office, tax-free up to seventy- four percent

our overseas asset declarations

during the tax amnesty

turned out to be piling up in Singapore.

And the most

painful part just happened this

month in the Surya Darmadi palm oil

corruption case. Let’s use common sense.

The forests that were damaged

and burned are in Indonesia.

The crime was committed on Indonesian soil,

and the Indonesian

people suffered losses of

tens of trillions of rupiah.

But when the proceeds of that crime

flowed into Singaporean banks

and the case was uncovered, Singaporean courts instead

seized and took one point ninety-six

trillion rupiah for themselves.

What right does Singapore have to

take the Indonesian people’s money?

This is where the true face

of their ecosystem becomes

clear.

When business is profitable

and operating legitimately,

Singapore is

reap the benefits.

When they are proven wrong and violate

the law,

they join in trampling on us,

and the money is taken by Singapore

as well. In my previous video,

I illustrated

that they are

kiasu, both wanting the middle when walking side by side.

Thus, my analogy is complete.

Eat, drink, and sleep in Singapore.

Throw away trash and

defecate in Indonesia.

And what Singapore’s former Prime Minister,

Lee Hsien Loong, said was

like the finishing touch, spitting in our living room.

I made this content only to stir our patriotic spirit

as a sovereign nation, not as losers or traitors

who are always paid to side with foreign countries.

Singapore must know,

Indonesia today is not the Indonesia of

1998, whose foreign exchange reserves were thin,

so its economy

frail. Today, Indonesia's economy is solid,

our democracy is advanced,

our society is open.

The main requirements to become a

developed nation are all in place.

Let's ask Singapore whether

they are ready for complete openness.

Only time will tell. Because from afar, we can see

your openness is very superficial.

In this era of open collaboration,

where the winner takes all,

Indonesia will begin

downstream processing.

I have a feeling Indonesia will cancel all

foolish agreements,

including the foolish 2020 tax treaty

that brings no benefit to Indonesia.

Indonesia will also reform

itself from within.

We have much homework to complete,

such as infrastructure,

bureaucracy, efficiency, and much more.

All this is guaranteed by democracy.

If they fail, they won't be elected again.

Singapore, fifty years under one party.

Good luck, PAP, just below the sky,

but certainly at the

edge of a cliff.

Lihat potongan video mantan Perdana Menteri Singapura pada acara Mayday Rally tahun 2015 lalu. We are already Indonesia's biggest foreign investor.

They are fifty times bigger than us. Two hundred and fifty million people. From time to time they remind us of that.

Singapura lima puluh tahun satu partai. Selamat berjuang, PAP, sedikit di bawah langit, tapi pasti di depan jurang.
