operation is described by the Civil Guard in the aforementioned official report. We recreated the report to be able to work with it. We removed the scores and reordered the names alphabetically to start from scratch and better understand how they reached the final promotion and relegation

list. The first grades are the scores from the match delegates regarding the referee performance and the difficulty of the match, which, when added up, give the total field scores written by hand in the

original report, and with which we can now make a first list ordered by these scores from the observer delegates. It is worth stopping here because what follows is the key to the Barça Negreira case.

This is the VAL CTA column, which stands for Technical Committee of Referees Evaluation. Above it, you can read the word despacho, meaning office, written by hand, in contrast to campo, meaning field, which are the grades already mentioned. This column is the famous correcting index, which was ironically known among

members of the refereeing community as the corrupting index. This was the column filled out by Sánchez Arminio and Enríquez Negreira at the end of each season, applying an unknown personal criterion with a value between zero and two.

At this point, I would like to highlight the names of the four referees who received the four best scores in the correcting index that year. They were Pérez Lasa, who was scored 1.60, Jaunch Andreu, with another 1.60, Ernanth Angulo,

with 1.30, and finally, Losantos Omar, with 1.30. The rest of the referees received a lower score between one and 0.50. We add the field score to the correcting index of each referee, and that gives us

the column with the total. And that would be the final grade that would lead them to be promoted, relegated, or remain in that category. Finally, we reorder the list with the definitive

positions, now with the correcting index applied. Interestingly, the four referees scored with the highest correcting index climbed straight to the top four positions.

Losantos Omar, Ernanth Angulo, and Jaunch Andreu were promoted to referee in the first division that season. How much does a first division referee earn? They earn a fixed salary of 145,000 to 168,000 euros per year. Per match, they get

4,200 to 4,900 euros. For international matches, referees earn 7,000 euros each. Plus, image rights add 25,000 euros annually for advertising. So in total, adding all the bonuses, it can reach 265,000 euros gross

During those twenty-five years, they applied their correcting index to the final records of the first, second, and second division B, and nobody ever knew what criterion it followed.

Football Club Barcelona stopped the payments to Negreira the exact same month he was dismissed as vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees.
