A Two-Column Journaling Exercise for Self-Improvement
If you wanna change your life so
fast it feels illegal, you need to
try this one exercise.
Every time I have had a huge
quantum leap and
completely changed my life,
I have done this.
So grab a journal and make two columns.
And in the column on the right, write your name 2.0.
So here I wrote Sarah 2.0. In
this column, you are going to
write all of the things that you desire for yourself.
So maybe you want 50K months,
maybe you want your best body ever,
maybe you
want a soulmate relationship.
Now, I know you've
heard this part before.
What you are going to do now is
you are going to write down all
of the thoughts, beliefs,
habits, and qualities
of the person, the version of
you, who has those things.
Don't say you don't know what those things
are or you would be doing them because I
promise you do know some things. So
for example, if you wrote
best body ever, that version
of you, maybe they're
going to the gym three
times a week. If you wrote 50K month,
that version of you is maybe
doing like outreach to leads
or brands that they wanna
collaborate with. Maybe
they're posting every day on social
media, whatever it is.
This version of you maybe speaks
kindly to herself so that you
have the confidence to move
through a room the way you want to.
Maybe this version of you, um, gets
herself ready
every morning.
Really think about the granular habits,
beliefs, and ways of
being. This is so, so important.
You are getting crystal clear on
who this future version of
you is, not just in terms
of what they have,
but how they are
showing up in the world to have those things.
Now you're going to go into the
column on the right and you're gonna write your
name 1.0. This is you now, and
you're gonna look at all of the things
you
wrote in the first
column in terms of habits,
thoughts, beliefs, ways of
being, and you are going to
see which of those you are
or are not doing now, and you're
going to write down what you're
doing
now in those parts of your
life. So maybe you wrote down
self-compassionate
in the first column, but
really you're super
self-critical, so
you're gonna write that
here. And this isn't about shaming yourself,
it's about
collecting data and
looking at where are the gaps
between where you desire to be and where you are now.
So write all of those
down. Then you are
going to circle all of these
places where you have
gaps. So you said gym three times a week,
but you never go,
circle that. All of those gaps that you identified, those are your
starting point for changing your life.
And if some of them feel too big,
you can totally start small.
It's going to get easier and easier to build.
Try it and let me know what you think.
