Language and Identity in Colonial Contexts

Citizens

of free countries usually communicate with one another

in the language of their people, their country.

Well, that's perfectly natural.

But this rule doesn't work

for colonies,

colonial countries,

because there the native language is always pushed

to the margins,

it's spoken by the indigenous lower strata of society,

while the upper clas— communicate among themselves

in the language of the metropolis.

But here's the thing, the natives want to adapt

and make it into the ranks of the bosses too, so they

also switch to the master's language.

But with, even with the most perfect

adaptation,

the master will always remind them who they are and where they come from.

Well, it's worth mentioning Pushkin here, who called

Gogol a khokhol.

So

we need to draw these conclusions,

that

it's perfectly natural when, in the master's home, the servants

speak the master's language, otherwise they simply won't be hired for

work. And here you have to

or a servant in the master's house?
