Discussion on Imam Al-Shafi'i's Teachings
I always like to quote Imam al-Shafi'i, may God have mercy on him.
Come, because this man—
I mean, he was a man
truly learned in jurisprudence. Imam Ahmad, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said,
“This young man,” meaning al-Shafi'i,
is owed a debt of gratitude
by every scholar of hadith because he was a jurist
despite his reverence for the texts of the Quran and the Sunnah. May God have mercy on him.
I will also quote another saying by al-Shafi'i, and forgive me for
loving this man, for the imams loved him before I did.
Al-Shafi'i says,
“Jurisprudence
is like Syrian apples, easy to pick.”
They say, “I have never seen an apple tree in my life,” but I understood from this
report that the Syrian tree, or the Syrian apple tree, is short,
and that anyone can reach its fruit. It is not a tall tree.
Likewise, sacred knowledge, including jurisprudence,
is accessible to all of us.
