Ok, here we go. Roll camera. Speed. In 3, 2, 1, action. Cut. We didn't hold back in making this film. There's stunts, there's big comedy set pieces and there's really beautiful emotional moments. It's not a romantic comedy, it's not an action film. It kind of is all those things.
This is normal, right? People go through stuff like this in the first year of marriage. No. Splitsville is about all the worst case scenarios that can happen in a relationship. Is that your husband staring at us? No, he's my friend.
This is your friend? That's Carrie. Ah, Carrie. Splitsville is about two best friends and they're stealing each other's girls. Everyone's getting back together, just moving on. It's dealing with infidelity, it's dealing with relationships and friendship and sort of messiness in love.
Splitsville is a film about a friend who fucks his best friend's wife. No, I'm just kidding. But it is. By the way, Julie and I had sex last night. Splitsville explores our sort of contemporary view on relationships and this sort of way that we all pretend like we can be analytical when we talk about cheating and open relationships and love. And in reality, we're all just sort of struggling to survive.
It's gonna be okay. Bullshit! Have you checked for tics? No, I'm okay. You should check for tics.
Carrie and Paul are best friends. They've known each other forever. They have as close of a relationship as two guys can have. What's going on? Checking for tics. Can I please just take a shower and cry by myself? This film's been incredible to make. Getting to work with my best friend, Kyle. He's truly an incredible comedic actor.
Carrie! Carrie! So we've sort of written the role for that. He's just an incredible physical comedian. He's like a clown. He and I are both sort of aspiring clowns where we just love physical comedy. We love to throw our bodies around. We love to do crazy shit. These guys are the real deal. There's no stunt doubles around anywhere.
This is real. This is real. This is real. This was real from day one. The first shot of the movie, I got smashed in the thing and then my head swelled up. It like pinched the vein. They're doing their own stunts. Mike just went down the stairs today. I told him nobody's going down these stairs and he did it. I didn't want to encourage it but he did. He found a way. He's got a very athletic background and it shows. Somehow there's catharsis to beating the shit out of each other.
We got a one month membership to a bouldering gym and instead of bouldering we just continued to beat the shit out of each other. And then these French Canadians would come by and they'd go, WWE! Good stuff dudes. Super sweat. What are you guys doing? Hey, how could you?
Our entire cast is just really special and remarkable. I feel so lucky to just drop into this movie and get to work with all these people. This is my fourth project I've done with Dakota. Dakota, she's so nice. She cares a lot. It's really actually fun to see Dakota just step into a comedic role. She's so funny. She's great with improv.
Every take, she's just spot on. You're very flexible with the physical. I do Pilates. Audrey Ahonohu I think is a complete revelation on the screen. She makes it look so easy but she just sucks you in in a really incredible way.
The lines are there. It's less about relying on the improv and it's more about having talented actors where they come up with the one line or the one joke or the one moment. That completely becomes the button on the scene. We closed down an entire theme park. We have the whole place to ourselves. We're going on a couple rides. Simon was really nervous about the roller coaster and he full blown was like, I'm not doing this.
It's cool to experience that. A kid's first time on a roller coaster when he's nervous and he's scared and he's all worried. And then there's a crowd of people cheering for him when he comes back and it's being captured on 35mm film. It's pretty wild. Yeah, he stepped up. Yeah, it was fun. I might go back tomorrow. It's my first roller coaster and I did it with my dad so it was a memory. We're shooting in Montreal. It's incredible. People here are so talented and really fun to work with.
Sorry I'm late. I brought the table in case anyone's tense. Our DP, Adam Newport-Berra, is doing an incredible job. The frames are just incredibly beautiful. So that combined with sort of the edgier, more honest content, I think it's going to make for something truly singular. We're really excited to be shooting this all on 35mm. It was never an option not to shoot this film on 35.
There's an immediate timelessness to things that are captured on film. There's grain and there's hair and there's specks of dirt and dust that you need to clean up or not clean up. For films like this that are trying to really tackle the nuance of love and relationships and find comedy and joy in it, it was really crucial to shoot on film because that texture really brings it to life. We've been wildly uncompromising in a lot of the decisions we've made.
It's like a reminder that if you really prioritize the right things, you don't actually lose that much and it doesn't cost that much more. And actually, it just imbues the whole film and the whole process with intentionality. It has been a minute since movies like this truly are getting made. There's either giant ones, very small ones, and then there's the in-between, which used to be the cinema that we globally loved and fell for and pursued and that has stayed in our heart.
DNA. That doesn't look like him. The hope with this was to make an independent film that has massive scope and scale, to do things in an independent way but not be limited by those constraints. We sort of put every single dollar on screen.
We made a film that we want to go to the theaters to see, that feels like an event, that feels surprising, that feels like something we haven't seen in a very long time. There's a lot of crazy choices and I think that's kind of the ride and that's the fun of it. It's a lot of fun.
