Palestinian Keys and Map: Displacement and Arabic Place Names
They were supposed to be able to return after two weeks,
and they're still waiting.
Many Palestinian families still have
an actual key to the homes that they were forced out of
between 1947 and 1949. So,
uh, it's very symbolic for the Palestinian
movement, the key.
Uh, the map,
uh, this is purposefully meant to
be bright and engaging so that it can educate as
well. Uh, these are the Arabic names
of the land, different parts of the land of Palestine,
um,
from before 1947 to 1949 when
Israel was forced upon this land,
and when 500 villages were burned,
750,000 Palestinians were forced,
ethnically cleansed from the land.
So this is how the, how the names were prior to Israel's
existence.
And these names are beautiful. They are
Arabic, but they, uh, they're specifically Palestinian Arabic.
Uh, they have roots in ancient Hebrew.
They have roots in Aramaic, which is the
language that Jesus spoke. Um, they have roots in
many different Canaanite languages as well from
millennia ago. So these are the names that I would
like to see us use for these parts of Palestine,
Falastine. Um,
and I believe if you can see it, you can make it
come to life. And this is, this is my vision
for Palestinians, for liberated Palestine, for
free Palestine.
So, uh, yeah, I hope, hope that helps to understand the context of
the map.
