Christianity and the Odyssey Analysis
Is it a good idea to Christianize the Odyssey?
Well, I don't think so because
actually one of the main motives that people of the time,
the early Christian period,
quoted for converting to Christianity from the classical gods
was that they finally found a system where morality
was actually holding it all together,
whereas in the pre Christian times,
especially in the classical world of gods and myths, it was the opposite.
Gods could do whatever they wanted at any time and they were not
bound by moral conducts and most importantly,
there was no sense that every life, every human life is sacred, not at all in the
classical times in the Greco Roman world.
So, yes, it is very important that if a representation of
the Odyssey is done, it shows that the pre Christian world was
operating on a completely different scale from Christian morality.
So if you go and Christianize the Odyssey, you in a way start to water down the
revolutionary aspect, the morally
revolutionary aspect that Christianity brought into the classical world.
That's why I think it's a mistake.
And I know that Elon Musk has said that he would put 100 million on
Mel Gibson to do another version of the Odyssey.
Well, that's possible, and if that's the case, then Mel Gibson...
would have to be
showing everything that Christianity is not.
So, yeah, it can be done,
but the moment you water it down, it loses the message.
The Odyssey is not a Christian myth,
and it's important on many levels for Christianity because it shows
everything that Christianity is not.
