Jamie Dornan Discusses Auditions and Acting
Hi I'm Jamie Dornan
and something about me that nobody knows
is that I when I was three years old
I split my head open
and I actually had to have plastic surgery
when I was three on the middle of my head
because it was so sort of gruesome
and I've got a big scar here that nobody really notices.
The first thing I ever auditioned for
was Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette
and I got it and it was my first ever job.
It lured me into this false sense that
like it's really easy to get work
but it was my first audition so
you know I had a lot of terrible ones subsequently.
The worst audition I've ever had was Rock of Ages.
I thought it was a good idea
to bring a little bit of whiskey to like soften my vocal cords
and maybe give me a bit of confidence
and I vomited but they liked me I think
and they kept making me sing and
I kept saying I'm not getting there
but they kept going no I think you've got it man
let's go again let's go again
I was like dude I can't I can't do it
that was a terrible one.
Did I get stage fright when I sang Wildemount in time?
Yes if suddenly you're in a pub
and there's a lot of the main cast there
and Christopher Walken, John Landau, Emily Blunt of course
a load of extras and crew
and suddenly it just changes everything you know
something you're like no no no I can't do this
and the thing is Emily Blunt is a singer
like a proper singer and
then so knowing I'd have to sing up with her
it's it was it was kind of brutal
but you know I got through it.
It is a bit of a relief playing someone with an Irish accent
but it's a different Irish accent to mine
so it's actually it's like the equivalent of
someone from you know Boston having
to do a you know a Kentucky accent
I guess.
There's these green fields and there's us whatever that is.
I almost feel an extra pressure
when I have to play an Irish guy
like I've done it a couple times
isn't my own because
I feel like I'm going to be judged more harshly
on people from Ireland.
ABBA in front of the Peloton
was again something that's happened during lockdown I think.
One of my best friends from Belfast from home
was texting me going like
I just realised that working out to like songs
and musicals and is like the way forward and
I can only work out Hamilton now
and I was like really
well I just hadn't thought of that
so I gave it a crack.
You know it worked it worked for me
it was good it kept me kept me in the zone
somehow. I've only seen the Fifty Shades movies
I think I've seen them all once
when I had to see them to do press
to know what was going on particularly
two and three which we shot
simultaneously back to back and interwine.
I don't see them very often
when I'm flicking the channels and
if I did 100% I would not be stopping
no I would just flick on.
