Exploring Zodiac Symbols and Meanings
Virgo and Leo sit next to each other in the night sky.
Virgo is on the left and Leo is on the right.
Underneath, there's a few constellations, but by far the largest is
Hydra, a massive water serpent that stretches below both signs.
Notice how close Virgo's hand is to Leo's tail.
This is the Dendera zodiac from ancient Egypt.
Let's look at Leo and see what we can learn.
In the original version, we see a woman and lion riding,
of all things,
a serpent. And as I've highlighted before, lions and serpents have a
long symbolic relationship with each other.
The woman holds the tail of the lion, which implies control, and being on the
left places her right next to Virgo.
In this version, the pair rides a symbolic bow.
The woman holds the tail in one hand and a flail, which is a weapon, in
the other. The flail suggests control of the lion,
but this time through
force. And force happens to be an older name for
the strength card,
which as we know, depicts a woman taming a lion.
I made a video about this card suggesting that it's not only about Leo, but
about Virgo and Leo, AKA the virgin mother and her son.
I'm inclined to think that the dynamic we see in the strength
card between woman
and lion with its strong serpentine connection is actually
mirrored in the Dendera version of Leo.
The proximity of Virgo, Leo, and Hydra, the virgin lion and
serpent, is too coincidental to ignore. What do you think?
I'd love to know.
