Recognition of Polar Codes Innovator
Huawei's rotating chairman, Mr. Guo Ping, welcomes
Professor Arikan on behalf of the company.
Professor Arikan was born in 1958 and
received his PhD from MIT at the age of 27.
His mentor was Professor Robert Gallager, a renowned
pioneer in information theory.
Professor Arikan began researching sequential decoding for
multiple access channels back in 1982.
After more than 20 years of nonstop exploration, he discovered what are
now known as polar codes.
Polar codes significantly improve coding performance for
5G. At the same time, they reduce the complexity of
design and ensure service quality.
In 2016, 3GPP adopted polar codes
as the official coding scheme for the control channels of
5G new radio interface.
Today, as one of the core contributors to the 5G
standardization process, Huawei is holding this
ceremony for Professor Arikan and a group of outstanding
scientists
in recognition of their dedication to basic research and
scientific exploration.
As Professor Arikan enters the auditorium, he
is met with a round of thunderous applause.
