Syrian People's Assembly: Why 30% of Seats Are Reserved for Appointments

Regarding the People's Council and the appointments, honestly they dragged me into it.

At first it was international and they dragged me into the whole thing, so we said, "never mind, let him be appointed."

But I had concerns — I mean, the idea of appointments at 30%.

Because our society is currently somewhat polarized.

This polarization could lead to unsatisfactory results for the entire population.

So we left a 30% contingency margin in case the results turn out unsatisfactory.

And we can maneuver within it and conduct a full study of the results that occurred.

And see where the faults are and try to close those gaps.

One of the problems is that female representation emerged in it.

Our society is a bit patriarchal, and it doesn't really want women to be present.

So they'd try to drag me in, saying, "Go, you pick the women," you know.

People would say, "the president is a womanizer."

We figured they'd come out and say you're a womanizer to everyone.

That's why we're trying to study the flaws and close them as much as we can.

For example, there are some segments that are not fully represented.

At the same time, we should try, since we are in a phase of rebuilding the state

and when it comes to making laws, we're trying to choose people who will actually work in parliament

not just mere figureheads or people who are compromised or beholden to him

We need to work; we want people who truly have the experience to enact laws

because we are not in a phase of maintaining the existing state

we want to rebuild according to a new culture and a new vision

and a new vision of the regional and international reality as well

Syria is somewhat behind the times compared to its regional surroundings and the world

So that is the challenge. Don't ask me about it — please be a little more patient with me

Because the selection process — don't ask — they also put me in a difficult position

It happens to all of us; there are people who didn't win the elections or who didn't run

Anyway, I was appointed by the president, so I keep getting requests and such all the time

So I was also thinking we should go and hold new elections

for the president's share of the appointments

Why do people blame me? Because the ones who get upset are more than the ones who watch, and so on.

And honestly it's gotten a bit tricky, like there's no solution.
