Greta Thunberg's Activism and Beliefs
What does Greta Thunberg actually believe?
Because this week she turned up outside a high school north of Paris wearing a
keffiyeh to tell French teenagers that the whole world
was watching them with awe.
This is the same person who sat outside the Swedish parliament in 2018 because the
world was ending, and told the UN in 2019
that the world leaders had
stolen her childhood. Then in 2023, she stood in front of 70,000
people at the biggest climate march the Netherlands had ever seen, handed the
microphone to a Palestinian speaker and an Afghan speaker,
and led the crowd in
chanting:
No climate justice on occupied land!
No climate justice on occupied land!
A man climbed on stage and grabbed the mic off her.
The people in power have not been listening.
I come here for a climate demonstration, not a political view.
He got dragged off, and she told him to calm down.
He had a point though, because that was the moment the climate movement became
the
everything movement. The climate became Palestine
and trans rights, and anything
vaguely to do with social justice. In other words, the omni cause.
Since then, she's boarded a boat to Gaza
and been deported by Israel.
Then she did it again with a bigger flotilla and got deported again.
Then in March 2026 came a convoy to Cuba delivering 20 tons of
aid, including bicycles and solar panels, framed as solidarity against
American sanctions on a one party state.
And while all that was going on, she gave the actual climate summits a
miss.
She refused to attend COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2024,
calling it a greenwash conference run by an authoritarian petrostate with a
record of ethnic cleansing. Which could be a defensible position,
except she
spent that week at a protest in Tbilisi about the Georgian election results
instead. So we have carbon emissions, then Gaza, then Cuba, now French school
furniture. The causes keep changing, but her certainty never does.
And standing outside that school with 147 staff injured in the
protest led
by students since they began, her verdict was that the police response
was
extremely violent. So what does she actually believe?
Because it looks like it's whatever the crowd she's standing in front of believes.
