Illegal Migration and Spanish Citizenship Promises
Illegal migrants say they crossed after seeing videos online promising Spanish citizenship.
There are a lot of people in Ceuta.
I don't want to go back to the city.
I heard that you are doing charity work.
I'm here in Ceuta,
Spain. And on the ground to see firsthand the aftermath of
the 60,000 illegal migrants have had on this enclave.
Directly beside the land border.
I was able to speak with a group of young illegal migrants,
including an older Moroccan who was providing aid and assistance.
He admitted they all came because of online propaganda
videos mainly posted on Instagram promising Spanish citizenship to migrants.
Don't take my words for it.
Watch the video.

لأنهم سمعوا أن الحوضة تحلت
وكانوا يتعلمون ويحبون وكذلك
يهربون لا يقولون شيء من المغرب

يجب أن يكون هناك حياة أفضل.
I live in Europe, I live in Portugal, but I
can say that most of the people who come back are not lucky.
Only a few people can stay here.
I don't feel like going out, there is little food,
there is fear, there is cold,
there are people who earn a lot of money,
for example 30 or 50 euros a night. And
the food is expensive. Let me explain what happened.
The moment people heard that the border had been opened,
everyone came.
Most of them were young people looking for a better life.
They encouraged each other.
Almost everyone you saw was young,
and many of them were minors.
Why? Because they heard that in Ceuta,
minors could have their status. regularized,
that they would be placed in care,
received an education and be looked after.
They were not necessarily fleeing Morocco, they were simply looking for a better life and better opportunities.
That's why they came.
But after they arrived, most of them regretted it.
Why? Because when they got here, they found a completely different reality.
The people living in Ceuta were frightened by what happened and everything changed.
Now most of the,
now most of those who crossed have gone back.
The only ones still here are mostly minors, under 18 years old.
They are living in the streets.
Why are they staying? Because they still hope to be taken into care,
to regularize their immigration status and to have the chance for a better life.
Even though things are very difficult now, I'm telling you, the situation is hard.
I personally live in Europe, I live in Portugal, but with today's condition,
I think many of those who don't get lucky will end up going back.
Only a small number will be able to stay.
They are sleeping outside,
food is scarce,
there is fear, it's raining, it's cold.
And the few places available are charging outrageous prices.
30 euros a night,
50 euros a night.
