Impact of Starlink on Ukrainian Warfare
One of the key factors enabling Ukrainian units to maintain their combat
effectiveness and superiority in drone warfare has been their use of the
Starlink satellite network, which provides vital,
reliable communications
on the front line.
Anyone who doubts Starlink's importance to the AFU should recall the opening
phase of the Ukrainian conflict. In twenty twenty-two, the lack of
reliable communications, a shortcoming for
which the Russian armed forces are often
criticized, also affected the AFU, contributing to the collapse of the
front in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
By the summer of twenty twenty-two, regular deliveries of military aid to
Ukraine, including communications equipment such as
RF5800 radios from the US company Harris
equipped with Citadel encryption module, had enabled the AFU to
establish reliable communications between units at the tactical level.
Although Starlink terminals were relatively scarce in twenty
twenty-two and twenty
twenty-three, their widespread deployment across the AFU
began in
late twenty twenty-three. This provided virtually uninterrupted
communications
both on the front line and deep in the rear,
allowing units to coordinate their
operations in real time and improve their tactical
and operational positions.
Over the next three years, the number of Starlink terminals continued
to grow.
Meanwhile, the failure of the twenty twenty-three
counteroffensive and ammunition
shortages prompted the AFU to revise their tactics, placing
greater emphasis on unmanned systems.
It was then that they began experimenting with fitting Elon Musk's
terminals to UAVs and later, USVs.
By twenty twenty-six, a virtually unlimited supply of Starlink
terminals,
combined with established arrangements for supplying and producing relatively
inexpensive UAVs and USVs, had enabled the AFU
to build a fully integrated reconnaissance and strike network.
Communications through Musk's satellites formed its critical link.
UAVs, including FPV drones, operate over Starlink links.
USVs rely on Starlink as their primary command and control link,
while communications between units also run through the network.
In late twenty twenty-five and early twenty twenty-six,
even the Russian
armed forces demonstrated how effectively Musk's terminals could be used
for military purposes, prompting subsequent restrictions on their
use by Russian
forces.
Communications are a critical element of any war.
Without reliable communications, success is impossible.
Personnel and equipment cannot operate in a coordinated manner, and maneuvers
become disjointed.
The AFU, however, have made their entire communication
system dependent on
Starlink. Alternatives such as OneWeb are also used, but ninety
percent of communications go through the American system.
This dependence reveals the United States' actual role rather than the
one it presents publicly. If the White House wanted to end the war,
it would have
Starlink switched off. The AFU would not collapse
entirely, but imagine ninety percent of their drones
and USVs
suddenly becoming inoperable, panic, and disarray would be inevitable.
Starlink has demonstrated how satellites can serve both civilian and military
purposes. Developing its own low Earth orbit
satellite constellation is
therefore a priority for Russia, as illustrated by the Rassvet
Constellation.
Elon Musk's success offers a model for Russia to emulate through a program
serving
its national interests.
