Folic Acid in Bread: Fortification, Folate and Health Claims

What's actually inside your white bread?
Very soon it'll be government mandated that bread contains synthetic lab-made version of vitamin B9 called folic acid.
But what actually is it? Folic acid is manufactured in factories using petroleum-derived chemicals and then added to everyday products like wheat flour, bread, breakfast cereals, processed grains, and supplements. Your body can't use folic acid directly.
First, it has to be converted in the liver into an active form, which adds an extra metabolic step and, for many people, extra strain.
That's very different to how humans have obtained vitamin B9 or folate for thousands of years. Folate is a natural form of vitamin B9, and it's found in real foods that you can start eating today: eggs, leafy greens like watercress and rocket, legumes, avocado,
and everyone's favorite, liver. Folate is already bioactive, meaning your body recognizes it. It's absorbed efficiently, and it enters the metabolism smoothly. There's no conversion and no bottleneck.
In contrast, excess folic acid can spill into the bloodstream, where it's been associated with a range of potential health concerns, from immune reactions to more serious disease risks.
There's also a huge environmental cost to produce these additives.
Large chemical factories, petroleum refinement, and high energy use, all to add something synthetic back to already ultra-processed food. I want to applaud the companies I've seen adapting, reformulating their products, moving away from ultra-processed white flour, and working around this
mandate with whole wheat alternatives. And here's the truth.
If we don't buy it, supermarkets won't stock it.
So read labels, support better, cleaner ingredients, and question government interventions that are dressed up as public health but are built for industrial convenience and profit.
Eat real food and eat to heal.
