Methods to Grow New Brain Cells
How to grow new brain cells quickly.
If you're new to my channel, hi, my name is Robert Love.
I'm a neuroscientist, and I have a medical clinic in Florida
where we are reversing
Alzheimer's in our patients. In this video,
I'm gonna give you two behaviors and
some supplements that you can take to facilitate the growth
of new brain cells and
maintain a healthy brain, and yes, you can grow new brain cells according to
the
research. I know in high school we learned you can't
grow new brain cells.
That is no longer true. I want to cite the work of Dr.
Elizabeth Gould, a neuroscientist at Princeton.
She has published articles in the top journals of science
and nature showing that
adult mammals, basically all mammals except bats,
can grow new brain cells in the
hippocampus, the memory center of your brain.
Behavior number one, this might be the most important, it
is getting good sleep.
Sleep is when your brain cleanses itself. It's called the glymphatic system.
Number two, sleep is when you wire up new memories, so
if you don't sleep, you
actually don't have memories. Um, and number three, sleep is when your brain
repairs itself. And so if you're not getting sleep,
your brain's not gonna have the
opportunity to make new brain cells, a process called neurogenesis.
So get good quality sleep. That is necessary and essential for growing
new brain cells. Number two is exercise.
Exercise increases, uh, something called BDNF, brain-derived
neurotrophic factor. That's a growth factor
that facilitates the growth of new
brain cells and new neural connections and helps maintain a healthy brain.
Exercise, specifically resistance training,
so think weightlifting, causes your
muscles to make BDNF, make more BDNF that gets into the blood and
that can get into the brain and that can have a tremendous benefit in
growing new
brain cells. And then number three, make sure you are learning new things.
Give your brain something to learn, so you can travel and see new places.
You can spend time with, uh, new friends. You can take an online course.
You can watch a documentary, read a book, learn something.
Give your brain a reason. Exercise your brain and combine
that with physical
exercise and sleep. Those are three habits or three behaviors you
can do to
facilitate the growth of new brain cells.
Now, supplements, here's what you want to take.
Number one, a fish oil because your brain
is made of healthy fats.
You need healthy fats, so a healthy fish oil,
at least 1,000 milligrams a day of
DHA. And then also, you can take something called lion's mane.
Lion's mane is a medicinal mushroom that is shown to increase BDNF levels,
and so
that, that can also help facilitate the growth
of new brain cells.
And then there's something called hesperidin. Uh, I learned this from Dr.
Brandt Cortright. Excuse me. Hesperidin helps protect
new brain cells. And so lion's mane, fish oil, and hesperidin, those are three
supplements you can take along with those three behaviors to help grow new brain
cells quickly. I love you. God bless you.
