Ricky Gervais' 2020 Golden Globes Monologue: Jokes and Reactions
Watch this.
People from every background, but they all have one thing in common.
They're all terrified of Ronan Farrow. He's coming for you.
He's coming for you. Talking of all you , it was a big year for
movies.
Shut up. Shut up. I don't care. I don't care.
Many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories.
Um, unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about that.
The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very, very racist.
Fifth time, and it's still more fun than this, okay?
Spoiler alert, um, season two is on the way, so in the end,
he obviously didn't
kill himself, just like Jeffrey Epstein.
Shut up. I know he's your friend, but I don't care.
Our next presenter starred in Netflix's Bird Box, a movie where
people survive by acting like they don't see a thing.
Sort of like working for Harvey Weinstein.
You did it. You-- I didn't, you did it.
If Ricky Gervais says that in front of the whole room,
it's because he knew nobody
was going to stop him. What we just saw is Ricky warning the powerful people in
the
room that they're all terrified of Ronan Farrow, while Tom Hanks purses his
lips and Jonathan Price holds a tight smile.
In the moment, a lot of people thought he'd gone too far,
a comedian who got
carried away in front of people who weren't laughing.
Except that monologue was anything but improvised.
Usually, one lawyer reads over his jokes about an
hour before the show.
That year, he had to meet with about ten lawyers the
day before.
The strangest part is that the night fell one day before the
start of Harvey
Weinstein's trial, which more than eighty women accusers
planned to follow.
He goes back to Weinstein, and when the room boos him, he fires back,
"I didn't do
it. You did it." He also slips in that Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself,
even
though the authorities call it a suicide in his cell.
For a lot of people, Ricky said out loud what everybody already
knew, and the room
was afraid of a list of names. He says Tom Hanks just thought the joke
was a little
bit hot. Afterward, the association that ran the ceremony ended up dissolved
after
a boycott. So the real question isn't what Ricky
dared to say.
It's why everybody pretended to be surprised.
