Comedian on Mistranslating the N-Word and Life in Philly
Anytime somebody said, uh, the N
word, uh, the translation was
wrong. I didn't know 'cause
it, it said friend.
That's what everybody learns in Europe.
We're like, "Yo, what's up, my friend?"
Like, even in, in Tarantino
movies, like, uh, you guys know Django Unchained?
Yeah.
All right, it made no
sense 'cause it still said
friend in the subtitles.
But it was like, they were like, "Yeah, let's burn these
friends." And I was like,
"What kind of friend would do that
? " And there's one thing
that still confuses me to this day.
It's, it's the TV show,
um, Friends. Right?
'Cause- There's no
friends, like, where-
You gotta wait nine seasons. That's-
That's friendly people time, but that's a little late, you know?
The first time I went to New York,
where the show Friends
that has no friends-
... takes place, I was pleasantly surprised.
I thought, "Oh,
New York is a lot friendlier than I thought."
Not as friendly as
Detroit. Detroit was the friendliest place-
... I've ever been to.
And I moved to Philly, um,
when I was, uh, 21 to study jazz.
I'm a jazz drummer.
Oh.
Yeah, that's
why I quit. Nobody gives a
. I lived with a Black family of jazz
musicians, and they were like, "Are you sure
you wanna live with us
'cause you're from a
small town, and we lived in the hood."
I was like, "What does that mean?" They were like,
"You're gonna be the only white
guy the entire year." I was like, "Do you guys live in, like,
the friend zone?"
It's okay if you
don't get it. Get the next one.
I had never heard
gunshots. In the first week,
I heard gunshots every night, but I
thought they were fireworks.
And I asked them,
"What are people celebrating-
... every single night?"
And they told me,
"No, man, that's friendly fire."
