Medical Crisis in Gaza Amid Ongoing Violence
It was yet another tough, difficult day
that we needed to deal with
the horrible situation of lack of safety and security
and the continuous targeting of civilians
and the continuous violence-related trauma in Gaza Strip.
The past period and the testimony
of the medical team and what they keep saying
is that it's not a ceasefire at all.
It's not even close to being a ceasefire.
The first pouch of patients, we received several casualties
from an airstrike in Zawada and they were brought
in in a civilian car and dropped to our emergency department.
One of them, his injury was so bad that
we needed to operate on him immediately
and have do a three limb amputation.
He also unfortunately lost,
completely lost his vision in one eye
and the other eye is having a significant trauma,
which means that he will most probably become blinded
for the rest of his life.
And then after just less than two hours,
another airstrike in Deir el-Balah, close to Al-Aqsa Hospital,
and from that casualty, multiple casualty,
multiple trauma, ER in Al-Aqsa Hospital
asked for our support to decongest
and we sent our ambulances to pick up
six in two trips, six casualties from that incident.
They varied between yellow and red cases.
Some of them needed exploration, urgent exploration in our OT.
Some of them needed external fixation to their complex fractures.
This is a high magnitude of trauma and violence that
tired, exhausted medical teams and almost collapsed healthcare system
with a very limited and scarce availability of medical supplies,
consumables, medications, and medical equipment can deal with.
And it's not stopping and it doesn't appear to be stopping
anytime soon. We need to advocate more and more for a true ceasefire in Gaza.
