Survivor's Account of 9/11 Attack
All of a sudden I heard a roar and I saw one of the towers blow
and then collapse and fill the horizon with smoke.
And I yelled, "Oh my God." And I saw from street level as though it
had
exploded up a giant rolling ball of flame
and the firefighters screamed, "Run." And I turned to run, but I
fell and I felt someone scoop me up, tell me to throw my
high heels off, and I was running in my stocking feet with him.
And finally, as we ran and ran, he slammed me into a wall
and covered my body with his. I could feel his
heart beating against my backbone.
And I think both of us were sure we were dead
because
there was no way you could run fast enough and there was no way to avoid
it. But somehow we escaped the flame, which
was immediately followed by a storm
of debris. Uh-
This morning when tower, the first tower collapsed, I
was standing about
three blocks away with CBS News correspondent Mika Brzezinski.
As a fireball rolled towards us, Mika grabbed her shoes, I grabbed her
hand, and we ran like hell.
And all hell broke loose.
The South Tower now
is starting to implode. The fireball
is following us, so we're running away from a fireball
towards Financial One.
And at that point, we thought that we were running into the
entrance of Financial One,
but it was just the way the building was made.
The fireball hit Financial One, sheared a part of it
completely off, and the area where we were in, that
section entombed us with all the debris that was
coming off of the South Tower as it was imploding.
An explosion. At that point, I got knocked out.
I don't remember anything.
Then I got up,
and I remember walking out, and it was total darkness in the
corridors. And I was at the edge. I was in a dentist office because there was
dentist chairs and tools. And I looked out the window because the
windows exploded,
and the street below caved in. The whole street caved
in. You can see below the street. And at that point, there was like
fireballs coming up. So I said, "All right, I'm not gonna make it." I,
I really
didn't think I was gonna make it.
