Screen Time and Right Brain Development in Children Ages 0–3
Scary, right? Now watch this.
There are certain what we call critical periods of right or social emotional brain development.
One is zero to three, and it's the most important because what's happening is something called
neurogenesis. So it's the growth of cells.
Let's emphasize how big that growth is. This is the brain across a lifetime. See those
first years? It triples in size. Now pay attention to this bit.
Is critical to them growing that right brain because 85% of the right brain is developed
by three. Crazy, right? 85%.
Everything your child needs to cope without a screen, that's regulating emotions, dealing
with boredom, coming up with things to do, playing imaginary games, visualizing during
reading and storytelling, creativity, curiosity, feeling content.
All of that comes from the right brain. So giving them regular screen time, including
educational content during that period is like training the hamster for the wheel when
it should really be learning to explore.
