Understanding Soccer's Unique Timing Rules

People watching soccer right now, stop trying to change it.

I'm seeing so many American fans watching soccer

for the first time in probably four years,

two of them being generous if they care

about the Women's World Cup, which I do.

And they're watching and going,

why does the clock work like that?

It should work like this.

Shh, okay?

A lot of other countries care about this sport all the time.

And if you actually show the sport a little bit of respect,

that it continues to exist

even when you stop looking at it,

that's called object permanence.

We teach it to toddlers.

Okay?

If you were to pay the respect that it deserves,

you would notice that that's kind of

some of the beautiful stuff about it.

Now, I hate the hydration breaks,

and this is part of why,

because the timing and the movement of soccer,

the way it moves through time,

is crucially important to the format.

So the hydration breaks break the game up into quarters,

and it is not a game that is best served in quarters.

And you'll notice a lot of times,

a goal will be scored,

or even a response goal will be scored,

and then they'll have to stop,

and everybody drinks water.

Now, I get it.

It's hot out.

I'm complaining about it,

and I'm not running.

There's so much running in soccer.

It's crazy.

And so I get it.

They do need to hydrate.

But the fact that they're showing ads during it the fact that the announcers have started referring to the game in quarters

I just don't like it and I think we should find a different solution

I don't know what it is, but I do think that like that part is ruining the actual game that has existed

That's the stuff you can be frustrated with but please stop saying that they shouldn't run the clock like this

It's it's how soccer works and if a goal is scored when you're in stoppage time

Then they add some extra time to it that doesn't show up on the graphic

You just have to know that it just accept that that if they get saved plus five

That doesn't mean the game ends at 95. It means the game will should end around 95

But if any extra stoppage happens within the five, you've got to account for that on the back end

They're trying to make sure that all of the time gets used which is kind of a beautiful thing

But people are like I don't get it. Why can't they just adjust the clock?

Why can't they just do that because it's not how it works and it's always worked this way

So stop coming in here and going blow this wall out change this. It's not your restaurant. Okay, just eat your food

It has and shut up
