Journey from Protestantism to Catholicism
I left the Catholic Church in Valley City, North Dakota, and
I ended up becoming ordained a Protestant pastor
of a non-denominational church for seven years in Bloomington,
Minnesota, five years in Dayton, Ohio.
Wonderful friends, wonderful Bible studies, tremendous praise
and worship. A very typical non-denominational church.
It was years later that I started really studying deeper the
theology in the New Testament, and I read these early church fathers.
It was like they were giving me keys to unlock the
mysteries of
the Old Testament. And the more I studied
the disciples of the disciples, the more I started to
realize that what was central to them was not central
to me and the non-denominational church that I was a pastor
of. I realized that the early church did not
see the Eucharist as a
symbol, nor did they see it as Jesus and bread, but
they saw it as literally bread becoming fully the body and blood,
soul, and divinity of Jesus. And when I started to realize that the early
church believed that Jesus was the Passover lamb
and that he died for us and that we consume
him, I thought, "Wow, why don't we do that anymore?" I really came to the
conclusion that if this Catholic Church has the very body and blood, soul, and
divinity of Jesus, if this is the church that gave
us all of this, what am I doing outside of
it? I have to make a decision. What am I gonna do?
