Hungarian Revolution Anniversary and Political Prisoners
I must point out that on Friday we will commemorate the
seventieth anniversary of the nineteen fifty-six
Hungarian Revolution at a time when, once
again, there are political prisoners in Hungary.
In Hungary, an arbitrary regime is being established
and political opponents are being systematically
neutralized. All this while the EU
institutions are completely silent.
Through retroactive legislation, a large number of
opposition politicians have been stripped of their right to stand for
election.
The servers of the largest opposition party have been seized, and its
politicians are being subjected to, subjected to criminal
proceedings.
Most recently, a former state secretary, a mother of three, has been
imprisoned on the basis of utterly absurd charges.
It is a grave mistake to claim that the rule of law is being
restored in Hungary. In reality, an
arbitrary regime is being constructed, and that
evokes bad memories of the communist era of the
fifties.
