Benefits of Sunlight for Health
Whoa, guys.
Wow.
This is incredible. They opened up an outdoor-
Oh, it's lovely
... space on the roof for this critical care
patient.
In London, King's College Hospital, they put her outside in
the sun.
It feels lovely. I don't wanna leave.
She doesn't wanna leave. From the 1890s to the 1950s, many
hospitals had outdoor solar decks where patients would go
outdoors. We have forgotten this. Look at this photo from the 1930s.
These are patients outdoors in Italy, healing in the sun.
Now, contrast this with some health influencers
fearing every single
photon of ultraviolet light from the sun, walking around with UV
umbrellas, looking like vampires.
It's not good for longevity to avoid the sun.
A very large study from Sweden, published in 2014, followed
29,000 women over 20 years. Those women who avoided the sun
had approximately double the all-cause mortality of the women who went in the
sun. Near-infrared, infrared light, you get these things naturally outdoors
from
the sun. They pass through the clothing, through your body, and are beneficial for
your mitochondria. There are so many benefits to the sunlight
that go
beyond vitamin D. Nitric oxide, the sunlight is known to be
immunomodulatory. It changes your gut microbiome, mood,
circadian rhythm entrainment. Too much sunlight can certainly be harmful
for us,
but moderate, reasonable amounts of sun exposure,
as you see from this patient,
they give her motivation to keep fighting through her illness.
Send this to someone you know who has begun to fear the sun.
