The Value of Papaya Latex in Farming
Many people think Thai farmers grow papayas for the fruit itself. Wrong.
Ninety-nine percent of Americans have been fooled because the real reason they make
millions of dollars every year is the white liquid
that comes out of unripe
papayas. A white substance that is said to be more expensive than
gold and rarer than diamonds. Some claim that just ten grams can
sell for thousands of dollars. You might wonder,
why would a drop of white liquid
be so expensive? It all starts with the harvesting process.
Every day before sunrise, workers select unripe green papayas
because only at this stage, the inside of the papaya contains large
amounts of
latex. Workers then use special tools to gently
make several small
cuts on the surface of the papaya. Soon, the white liquid slowly flows
out from the cuts and drips into prepared containers.
But this process requires extreme care because if the cuts are too deep, the
fruit can be damaged, causing the papaya to lose its market
value.
After collection, the papayas are left with many marks on the surface.
Their appearance is no longer attractive, so they are sold at very low
prices. Sometimes, you can buy twenty of them for just one
dollar, but the
real value comes from this overlooked white liquid.
After filtration, purification, and processing, the papain enzyme
inside is widely used. It can help soften meat fibers in
food processing
