Sustainability and Responsibility in Leadership
Well, it's a great, it's a great honor, and I was very, uh,
well, it's always, it's always nice to be chosen and, and to,
uh, receive,
uh, such a, an honor. And, uh, but the-
it- what's most important, I think, is the commitment that
the university's making to, uh, include
sustainability in how it is forming the future, uh,
leaders of, uh, our church and of our, uh, in this
case, of the United States. I think that's, that
is the important message of the
medal.
Pope Leo himself will be presenting to you this medal
in the course of this important conference.
Why do you believe this conference is so significant at
this time?
Well, because it, it, uh, takes hold of one of the, um,
most basic questions we face, and it's not just an environmental
question, it's a
big, larger social and even more, like, technological
question, which is what, what is our future?
Or as he asks in the encyclical, what kind of a world are we building?
And that we need to take, uh,
uh, we need to recognize our responsibility
for the kind of
world we're building. It's not just, uh, there for us.
And lastly, the Pope's encyclical and the echo that it's
received, d- how do you think it's been...
Lastly, the Holy Father's encyclical, Magnifica
Humanitas, what echo do you believe it's receiving
and
what additional responsibility does that
mean for actors in the Church, but for all
individuals in the world who are committed to sustainability?
No, it's very, it's very gratifying that the Pope's message, uh, is being
read so widely and so, uh, uh, so broadly.
Uh, that is, I think, it might be a first, uh, in the, in the
history of the Church. And, um, it's, uh,
it now, uh, invites everyone to, uh, stand up.
It invites everyone to, uh, recognize,
uh, that we're involved, uh, and that it isn't just something happening to
us, but it's something we're responsible for.
This was already the call, uh, to ecological responsibility.
We also are called now to this responsibility for this
very exciting and, uh, but, uh,
concerning development of artificial intelligence.
