SpaceX's Starlink Mobile Plans
AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, and it's targeting one of the biggest
frustrations for cellphone users, dead zones.
Well, SpaceX is buying wireless spectrum
licenses that could help transform
Starlink Mobile from a satellite backup into a major nationwide
wireless carrier. The company says the low band spectrum
could help
signals penetrate walls and reach customers inside buildings where
satellite
connections can struggle. The company addressed the announcement
saying, quote,
"This prime low band spectrum addresses one of the key remaining
technical gaps that will pave the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major
mobile carrier in the US." And it's not just about better reception.
The FCC has approved SpaceX requests to launch up to
15,000 satellites dedicated to mobile service, potentially
giving the company a massive new network in the sky.
But not everyone is excited about the news, as now rival carrier stock
prices took a tumble. AT&T, Verizon down, and
T-Mobile stocks are all down 6% following the news, while
SpaceX stock, well, it is up 3%. But Musk's cellphone
ambitions are far from a done deal.
SpaceX still needs regulatory approval, and Verizon says it won't give up
its turf without a fight. It told Fox Business, quote, "Satellite
is a
complement to, to, to traditional terrestrial networks.
Acquisition of spectrum alone does not provide the network or
infrastructure to offer true nationwide coverage or to compete with
mobile providers. A company can have billions of dollars of
spectrum, but
without the network to use it, it's just empty airwaves."
I mean, Rosanna, this is interesting because I go through these
dead zones.
I'm on, like, calls with producers, and then our calls just drop.
Like, and to solve this would be amazing.
I hate this. Can you hear me now? Wait.
And you're walking around and everybody's looking at you like you
have two heads.
Yes.
Listen, Elon has disrupted the car business.
He's disrupted the space business.
If he can figure out these dropped calls and lower my bills, I'm
all in. New Yorkers, we have a lot of dead zones, so I...
If he can fix the problem, he's got my vote.
I mean, and Elon Musk, Tommie, like he has brought Starlink into war
zones.
It, it is remarkable what this man has
accomplished.
I have a long list, but that is just one-
