Political Speech on Change and Representation

My name is Mayla Quiroz, I'm a lawyer, I'm a Ph.D. student, I'm a barista, and I'm an immigrant.

Woo!

I moved to Denver, I immigrated to Denver in 98 when I was a baby from Ethiopia.

I watched my parents work for years to navigate the immigration process.

and after they earned their citizenship and chose their political party, I asked

my dad, why are we Democrats? And he didn't hesitate to tell me about the

Civil Rights Act, Social Security, fair labor laws.

This is the party that fights for the people.

But it didn't just happen overnight, the party didn't just wake up and decide to do the right

thing.

It was pushed.

By organizers, by dreamers, by people who refuse to accept the world as it was.

And with everything at stake right now, it's on us to push the party again.

And not just to fight back against Trump, but to fight for a better world, a world where

your salary actually covers your basic needs, where our taxes on universal housing don't

healthcare instead of bonds, but our leaders, instead of their voters, instead of their donors.

They don't want us to believe that a world like that is possible, because there is far

too much money to be made by keeping things exactly as they are.

I am grateful to the Congresswoman for her service, but for us to meet this moment, there has to be a change.

A change that starts by electing leaders who are unbought, unafraid, who stand up to the billionaires and corporations who are in power.

I am the only candidate in this race who refuses corporate PAC money, because I'm running to

represent money and interest.

I'm running to represent you.

And every voter who wants to see their money, they have to vote for me.

their leaders called to abolish ICE, to end the genocidal wars that are funded by our tax dollars,

and to put out the corruption in our government once and for all.

Every single breakthrough.

this party has had was born out of the hearts of people in rooms just like this

who dared to believe that a better world was possible.

I want to see a show of hands real quick. How many people here, this is your first

caucus and assembly?

Look at that.

Look at how many people are here in this room

ready to make a change,

to be a part of making that change.

This is a movement that is

up for and by the

people and I am so grateful

to stand by all of you and to fight

alongside all of you to take

back power for the working

people.

My name is Maylak Kuros, and it would be my greatest honor to serve as your next Congresswoman.

Thank you.

Neymar! Neymar! Neymar!
